LeRoy Doar Obituary

DOAR, JR., LeRoy LeRoy Henning Doar, Jr, 77, of 44 HarborGate, passed away on September 21, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate in Anderson, SC. Born on Pawley's Island, SC, Mr. Doar was the oldest son of the late LeRoy Henning Doar, Sr. of Gergetown and Margaret White Doar of Chester. Mr. Doar is survived by his former wife, Dorothea Hesse Doar of Portsmouth, RI, and their sons, LeRoy H. Doar III and his wife Kathy of Newfields, Nh and Anthony D. Doar and his wife Jody of Needham, MA; a brother, James Marion Doar of Mt. Pleasant, SC and his sister, Mary Jane Hunter of Georgetown, Texas. Additionally, Mr. Doar leaves three grandsons; Adam R. Doar of San Diego, CA, Jonathan A. Doar of Charleston, SC and Tyler M. Doar of Boston, MA and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Doar graduated from Clemson University in 1952 with a BS in Chemical Engineering and lettered for the varsity track team. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge with decoration as a First Lieutenant in 1962. He later went on to earn his Masters in International Relations from Webster University. A recognized leader in the packaging science industry, Mr. Doar began his professional career with DuPoint in Wilmingtion, Delaware. From there Mr. Doar worked with a number of domestic and international packaging firms before forming his own company, Omega International Group in 1966, based in Fairfield, Connecticut. While in Connecticut, Roy was active in numerous civic organizations, including Pop Warner Football and the Boy Scouts of America. An Eagle Scout himself, he supported his sons in scouting and thrilled in seeing them also achieving Scouting's highest honor. When not listening to his favorite opera on Saturday afternoons, Roy enjoyed camping, hiking, and sailing. He was a longtime member and supporter of the Appalachian Mountain Club. In 1982, Roy relocated his business to South Carolina and began a 20 year career as an associate professor and lecturer as one of the founding members of the Packaging Sciences Department at his beloved Clemson University. While at Clemson, Roy was also a proud member of the Senior Platoon Honor Guard and a Class 52 representative in the development of the Military Heritage Plaza. In recent years Roy also taught Opera Appreciation courses in Lifelong Learning Programs at Anderson and Furman Universities. A memorial service and celebration of Roy's life will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson on Monday, October 8, 2007 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the famiy requests donations be sent on Roy's behalf to Hospice of the Upstate, Inc., 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC, 29621; or Home with a Heart, 220 James Mattison Road, Liberty, SC 29657; or Haven of Rest Ministries, 219 W. Dear Doar Family,

Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of your father and grandfather. Mr. Doar was my Packaging Science professor at Clemson from 1992-1995. He will always be a huge part of my "Clemson Experience", and I continue to enjoy many memories of knowing him long after graduating. I can't think about Mr. Doar and not smile. I can picture him looking down from heaven enjoying his favorite cigar! I hope that God gives you comfort during this sad time, but I also hope your cherished memories will bring you happiness for many years to come.

Sincerely,
Robin Brown Harbaugh
