I met Larry just last year while working on a project togeather on the base. He was my design reviewer for the Engineering/MS4 compliance. He turned out to be alot more than a typical reviewer. He ended up becoming a friend that I shared many an off work conversation with and an outing on shem creek this summer. Within that short time I made a friend for life. I enjoyed the time we shared and the stories he shared from his early years in the military to his most recent stories regarding his cruise with Brittany and Evan.
We had plans to catch up after the holidays which is how I just found out about his passing. So I wanted to pass on my condolences to his family. I will always remember Larry for the warm hearted, fun loving, fella that made a friend in everyone he met. We will miss you Larry.

This was tough news to take. Beginning with the bond we formed over 30 years ago as a part of our Kings Point class of '85, 2nd Co., I'll always remember the fun times and long conversations with Larry. We gathered occasionally in those early years after graduation, but that became much less frequent after marriage and kids. But Larry was good about calling me out of the blue at least once every couple of years. Before saying ‘Hi, how are ya,' he would often start right into some comical experience we had shared years ago. However ill-timed his call might be, and despite my pre-occupations with either work or household chaos, he would make me smile and I'd find myself absorbed with Larry in all kinds of topics, from our memories of mutual friends and events, to the issues of our day, to good books we'd read, and most of all - to his pride and admiration for Brittany. Larry's passing is a stark reminder that our time in this life is short, and that friendship is the most valuable gift we can offer. Larry reached out to me (and others) with that gift on many occasions, way better than I do for my old friends. I will miss the good times we shared and those occasional phone calls from Larry. Man, I'll miss those phone calls…

To the family of Larry: I used to visit my father Chuck Doherty in Japan in the late 80's. Larry was often with us. We went out to fun restaurants for sushi and gyoza. Larry always seemed like a nice guy (I was 8 at the time). I send my condolences as my father just passed away in Iraq in Oct 2011. It's hard saying goodbye to a dad. May his spirit live on. The days are very hard in the beginning when your dad is gone.

Dear Brittany, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad passing away. I used to work in the same buidling with him. I just talked to him last month. I can't believe he's gone. May God bring you comfort and peace in your memories of your dad.

Years ago, I was in a group of friends that did everything together and Larry was right in the middle. We lost touch over the years except through Facebook, and I do regret not staying closer in touch. He was a funny guy, and we were all family to each other as none of us had family here. I will miss you Larry and remember all of our fun times, as there were many. Rest in Peace my friend.

When we arrived at the USMMA 30 years ago, they told us that our section mates would be the people we think of as our most important friends for the rest of our lives. I found that hard to believe having just been forced to leave my best friends back home in order to go through a hellish indoctrination with these guys. I was wrong. Before the first two weeks were over, Larry and the rest of Section 2B became my brothers for life. Like the rest of our brothers, I am very saddened by Larry's passing. He was honorable, intelligent, hard working, bold, funny, and absolutely one of a kind. There is no question that our USMMA experience would not have been as special or memorable without him. I'm sorry that I didn't stay closer over the years that followed. That Larry loved and cherished his daughter more than anything is probably what defines him best. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

I was a classmate of Larry's at the US Merchant Marine Academy and although I didn't know Larry very well, I do know that he truely represented the motto that we learned to live by "Acta non Verba" (Deeds not Words). My sincerest sympathy for his family and friends.

Brittany,

When someone from KP passes away they say that they have "Crossed the Bar". What follows is the poem by Tennyson.

Larry - Fair winds and a following sea.

With love.
Uncle Fred and Uncle Barney. SUNY '96, KP '00

Crossing The Bar

Sunset and evening star?
And one clear call for me!?
And may there be no moaning of the bar,?
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,?
Too full for sound and foam,?
When that which drew from out the boundless deep?
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,?
And after that the dark!?
And may there be no sadness of farewell,?
When I embark;

For though from out our bourne of Time and Place?
The flood may bear me far,?
I hope to see my Pilot face to face?
When I have crossed the bar.

Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)

The sandbar (a ridge of sand built up by currents along a shore) is used as a metaphor to describe the barrier between life and death.

Larry was a friend and classmate of mine at the US Merchant Marine Academy. He was hard working, had many talents and was committed to his friends. His passing saddens me and is a reminder that we need to make life an adventure, like Larry did. I hope that Larry's family and friends will be comforted during this difficult time. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.

Words cannot express how sad I am to hear about Larry's passing. Larry and I were close friends and, though we drifted apart, I often thought about him but never got around to reconnecting. For that, I am truly remorseful. To the family, please accept my deepest condolences in your loss. I will miss you, old friend.

I'm saddened by Larry's passing. We were assigned as Navy Civil Engineer Corps officers in Japan together around 1987-88. I remember that he was able to converse fluently with Japanese...very impressive! Rest in peace, Larry, and may God watch over your daughter and other family members in this time of sorrow.

Larry was my freshman or plebe roommate at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Being away from home and at a military school was a challenging time our freshman or plebe year. Larry was always curious and honest in his feelings. He had a strong desire to please and be accepted.
I had keep in touch with him on an off through the last 25 years. One thing that touched me was his desire to be close and keep a bond with his daughter Brittney. While some of our class make may have talked about their professional achievement when we got together, Larry was more than happy to talk about his daughter and share pictures of the times they shared together. As the USMMA class of 85-2B gets older, we are reminded not just of our own mortality from Larry's passing, but to remind ourselves of the importance of the dear things in our lives.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Brittany.

Larry was a co-worker of mine for 20 years. He was very accomplished in many fields and had a great talent for programming software to benefit our organization.
He was very proud of his daughter Brittany and spoke often of her and her accomplishments. He will definitely be missed and I am truely sorry to hear of his passing.

I first met Larry as an environmental contractor at the Weapons Station and our paths crossed again after about 12 years when I started working at the Joint Base Charleston Environmental office. I was shocked and saddened by the news of Larry's passing. He was a very kind and gentle man, and he will be truly missed by all. May God bless and comfort the family during these difficult times.

I was very saddened to hear of Larry's passing. He was a very good friend and co-worker. I always enjoyed hearing how much he cared for his daughter, Brittany. He was truly a good father. I also enjoyed hearing about the exciting places he visited on vacation. Joint Base Charleston is really going to miss a great engineer, and I'm going to miss a great friend. I pray God will comfort Larry's family and friends during this difficult time.

Larry was a close friend of mine for almost 20 years. He was honest, loyal, a very good friend when I needed it most. He was a very accomplished man with a strong drive and determination to always improve himself. Here are just a few of his accomplishments:

Mechanical Engineering Degree
M.S. Computer Science
Accounting Degree
working on a MBA
Fluent in Portuguese
Fluent in Japanese
Accomplished pilot
Sailor and windsurfer

I'm sure I've left something out but his most endearing quality was his deep love and dedication to his daughter, Brittany.

I will miss you terribly, my friend!

Rest in peace!

Hearing the Loss of Larry was like being punched in the gut. I worked with Larry for 20 years. Going back to our employment together at the Old Charleston Naval Shipyard Environmental Department. He was a decent human being. The world will certainly be a lesser place without him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his soul, family, friends and especially to you Brittany.

I am so very sad to hear of Larry's passing. I've known Larry for twenty years. He and I worked together at the Environmental Office.
We conversed frequently about a variety of subjects. He was smart, witty, patriotic and loving. Every conversation included you, Brittany. He was so very proud of you and what you have accomplished.
I will miss him and the jokes he played on me (such as rearranging my desk) which is kind of bad for a guy who is visually handicapped such as myself. Always in jest, never in spite.
Please know that I will continue to honor his memory, his service to his country, his love as a father and his commitment to friendship.

With God's love and Grace,
