LaNelle Samuels Obituary

SAMUELS, LaNelle MANNING, S.C. - LaNelle Jackson Samuels, 90, wife of Hayes F. Samuels, Sr., died Monday, July 25, 2005, at her residence, 102 North Church St., Manning, S.C. Mrs. Samuels was born January 6, 1915, in Dalzell, SC, the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Miles J. Jackson and Cecila Davis Jackson and step-mother of Lula Hooper Jackson. She was a 1937 graduate of Johnson C. Smith Univ., Charlotte, NC. She was a licensed funeral director and a retired teacher and civic leader. She wrote the first proposal and received a grant of $88,000 for the first Headstart program in Clarendon County. She was assisted in writing the proposal by Robert "Bobby" Jenkins and the late Milton Walker. She was an active member of Trinity A.M.E. Church and was a member of several organizations. Survivors include son Hayes F. (Yvonne) Samuels of Manning, SC, adopted son Louis (Henritta) Richburg of Queens, NY, daughter, LaNette S. Cooper of the home, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four brothers, and two sisters. The remains will be in the church from 9 a.m. until the hour of service for viewing. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, July 29, 2005, at Trinity A.M.E. Church, 39 West Rigby St., Manning, S.C. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, Pastor, Eulogist Rev. Dr. Franklin Colclough, and assisting will be Rev. George P. Windly, Sr., as well as Rev. Melissa W. Green, Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, Rev. Jerome McCray, Rev. Carnell Hampton and Minister Ethel W. Sweat. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the S.C. and National Morticians Association. The family will receive friends at her residence, 102 North Church St., Manning, S.C., and the home of her son, Hayes. Memorials may be made to Trinity A.M.E.
