Ken Burger Obituary

Ken Burger CHARLESTON - Ken Burger - journalist, airman, father and grandfather, author, and tireless advocate for cancer patients and caregivers - slipped out of this life on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. Ken is survived by his brother Frank (Shirley) Burger of Toronto, Canada, and his loving wife, Bonnie Bezner Grossman. Other survivors include his three children Allyson (Tobias) Neuberg of Bankeryd, Sweden; Courtney (Billy) Lee of Chicago, IL; and Brent Neuberg (Stacia) of Chapin, SC. He also had two stepsons, Christopher Grossman of Charleston, SC, and Gregory Grossman of Greenville. Ken was the adoring grandfather to Graycen and Grant Neuberg, Ella and Leia Neuberg, Noelle Lee, and Jackson Grossman. Born at home on Crescent Drive in Allendale, SC, to Harry and Anna McDonald Burger on October 22, 1949, Ken grew up in the idyllic comfort of small-town South Carolina. He claimed to have been "baptized in sweet tea." Following graduation from Allendale-Fairfax High School, Ken went to Anderson College and then "studied abroad" at the University of Georgia, Grady School of Journalism, graduating dead last in his class in 1973. Tech Sgt. Ken Burger served 20 years with the Air Force Reserves, primarily in Public Affairs with the 315th Airlift Wing, Joint Base Charleston. Doug Nye hired Ken at The Columbia Record and made him a sportswriter. After 10 years at the Record and The State newspapers, Ken landed in Charleston as a reporter at The News and Courier. After a two-year assignment in Washington, DC, covering the US Senate, Ken returned to Charleston and was named Executive Sports Editor and Sports Columnist. For the next two decades, he wrote a column that bemused, amused, and sometimes infuriated his readers, but he fearlessly told the truth. His accolades included being named SC Journalist of the Year in 1996, and numerous awards from the Associated Press and the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. In 2013, he was honored with the Herman Helms Media Award as presented by the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. As Ken neared retirement from the newspaper in 2011, he retreated periodically to his condo on Seabrook Island where he became Ken Burger, author. His trilogy of Palmetto State stories include "Swallow Savannah," "Sister Santee," and "Salkehatchie Soup." Additionally, Ken published three collections of columns "Life Through the Earholes of our Youth," "Baptized in Sweet Tea," and "A Sporting Life." The family invites Ken's many friends to celebrate his life in a memorial service on Thursday, October 29, at 10:30 a.m. at the Summerall Chapel on the campus of The Citadel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ken's memory to the Ken Burger Memorial Fund c/o Roper St. Francis Foundation, or to the Ken Burger Athletic Memorial Scholarship, The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. Arrangements by Keith Smith Funeral Service, 128 Water Street, Allendale, SC 29810. (803) 584-2492. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Ken (or Kenny as I knew him) were very good friends in grammar school when his mother, Ana, was our Den mother. We lived in Allendale about 2 years. He even visited me when I moved back home to Georgetown. After Ken's funeral, I went to Beaufort that weekend for Pat Conroy's birthday celebrations and I mentioned to Pat I had attended Ken's funeral at The Citadel. He expressed how sorry he was to not have been able to attend due to his birthday celebrations there in Beaufort, but thought Ken was a great writer. Bill Thomas

I got to know Ken real well after I did the Sandy Hook Tribute back in 2/14/2013 and I must say I was shocked to receive a call from him expressing his feelings on my decorating as he told me I would receive my rewards for that one day Ken was always such a kind gentleman and so easy to talk to may he rest in peace as he has suffered enough and we all know he is in a much better place now.

Bonnie,
You were blessed with Ken. He was an amazing man who always spoke of you with such love. I shall miss his Southern-isms! He had a school boy's heart and a novelist's eye. I bet he's telling Tolstoy how he could have made 'War & Peace' a shorter book!

I only knew Ken through his columns in the Charleston Post & Courier and a couple emails we exchanged after he retired. I became aware of those columns when my son was a firefighter in Charleston and I wanted to keep abreast of Charleston news. Even though I was born, raised and have lived most of my life in Ohio I could personally identify with nearly every column Ken wrote. Perhaps that was because we are the same age, grew up in small towns, and had some similar experiences. I liked his writing so much that my wife gave me "Baptized in Sweet Tea" as a Christmas present. My thoughts and prayers are with Ken's family. May our Lord who welcomed Ken home give you peace and comfort.

We were only friends on Facebook and I never had the pleasure of actually meeting Ken, for which I'm very sorry. I enjoyed his posts and missed them when his illness worsened. I was away when he passed and only found out this evening. Very bad news indeed! He had so much to offer, he will be sorely missed.

Bonnie and family, I am saddened to learn of Ken's death. He was a mighty person behind a typewriter. I read his columns and enjoyed them. I will always treasure the fact that he was across the street and came by my shop to introduce himself. He seemed as carefree and light as a summer breeze and that was only this summer. He touched so many people with his goodness and good will toward others.

I send my condolences to. Bonnie and to Ken's family. It was my pleasure to have met Ken when he was my future husband's roommate. We were all students at the University of Georgia and all graduated in 1973. We all had such good times together and I will remember him as the "cool" guy with the gift of gab and genuine love of everyone he knew. We will miss him, but God has blessed us with the treasure of his writings which will teach and entertain future generations. Go with God, Ken.

I, as many of you I am sure, never had the pleasure to meet Mr. Burger but we all knew and loved him through his writings and stories that we had to wait patiently to read in the P&C. The two recent sad days were when he retired from the Post and Courier and I knew there wouldn't be any more stories forthcoming and now when he has passed. My sincere condolences go to Mr. Burger's family and to all those many invisable friends Mr. Burger acquired and may not have known he had through his writings. God Bless.

Sunday April 27,2008 Ken wrote "So many reasons to love golf", being a golfer I carry that article in my golf bag. It was beautifully written. To his family I am sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Kim Ray Welch

I was so sorry to learn of Kenny's passing. We were best friends in early childhood and Mrs. Burger was our Den Mother. I recently renewed our friendship when he spoke to the Winyah Indigo Society and my father and I spent some time with him. My whole family joins in sympathy to Bonnie and Frankie. His loss leaves a great gap in talent in this state.

I always looked forward to reading his column in Post & Courier. He surely had a talent with words. May his family treasure his life and thank God for blessing us with him.

A fine journalist whose articles about his dealing with prostate cancer opened a lot of eyes to the this male cancer. He then spent hours visiting men in the hospital who were in treatment. Had the pleasure of reading him, meeting him, conversing with him, and listening to him speak. Condolences to his family members.

The moments we shared will always be like lights on a Christmas tree..bright, twinkling, and heartwarming. Your "tree" will remain vividly lit until we laugh together again. Thank you, Bonnie, for being his True Love and such a wonderful caretaker and friend. He won the lottery the day you entered his life.
