Kathryn Dudley Obituary

Kathryn "Kathie" Jayne Martin Dudley CARRBORO, NC - Kathryn (Kathie) Jayne Martin Dudley, age 63, went to be with the Lord on July 19, 2017, in Carrboro, NC. Kathie, affectionately known by her family as KaKa, was born December 26, 1953, in Charleston, SC, to the late James R Martin Sr. and Kathryn Jayne Simmons Martin. Kathie went to James Island High School and upon graduating began at her father's alma mater Presbyterian College and then nursing school. She worked many years as a nurse at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC, before moving to Carrboro, NC, and transferring her nursing career to UNC Hospital. After working for several years in Waynesville, NC, she returned back to Carrboro, NC, and UNC Hospital where she had a career in nursing of over 25 years. KaKa. She is survived by her children, Paul Allen (Chip) Dudley and Elizabeth Suzanne (Liz) Eichman Dudley; and grandchildren Taylor James Eichman (10), Hunter George Eichman (8) Jordan Olivia Dudley (2). She is also survived by her siblings, James R Martin Jr (Dick) and Suzanne Martin, Clayton Simmons Martin (Clay) and Kimberly Martin, Ruth Elizabeth Martin Terll (Liza) and George Terll. Kaka lived her life for Chip, Liz and her three grandchildren. She was selfless and always thought of others and put their needs before her own. KaKa had the most infectious laugh, loved the beach - especially Folly Beach, loved family and spoiling her children, grandchildren and her seven nieces, seven nephews, five great-nieces, and four great-nephews. Kaka will be forever remembered by her family and friends for her quick wit, love of all things Duke and passionate will to help others. Her choice of profession, selfless attitude and desire to serve others before herself will be her lasting legacy on this earth. The patients she served and the family she leaves behind will be better people for having known her and for emulating her compassion for others. Kaka was a fighter and won her battle against breast cancer. In lieu of flowers the family would request donations be made in her honor to the Susan G. Komen BCRF. Kathie was one of the sweetest, most loving people I ever knew. I loved the way she would burst out laughing. I could always make her laugh. I've known her and her family for over 50 years and no finer people exist. Nursing was a great career for Kathie because she was professional, to the letter, but naturally nurturing. She was my best friend's sister, but also my sister. We all had so much fun over the years and I loved her and will miss her. Rest in Peace, Kaka.

Today heaven received another nurse angel . Kathie Dudley was as wonderful friend and nurse. Her compassion for her patients and coworkers was beyond expectation. We go way back many years at UNC; never worked the same unit but did float to each other's floor. Whenever I floated to 6W and Kathie was on, I knew everything would be OK. She would often check on me to make sure I was doing OK. And answered all my questions regardless how stupid. When night shift was over and we were leaving I would also find her by the door smiling and her saying "sleep well." She was just a couple years away from retirement. UNC has lost a wonderful dedicated nurse and we have lost a true friend. Jan Behe
