Joyce Jacobs Obituary

JACOBS, Joyce Entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 11, 2006 Joyce Karen Tisdale Jacobs, wife of Howard Rivers Jacobs, Jr. of Charleston. She was born in Andrews, SC a daughter of Benjamin Blakeley Tisdale and Mae Scott Tisdale on Friday, January 9, 1931. Mrs. Jacobs attended public schools in Andrews and graduated from Andrews High School. While a student there she was active in a variety of school programs and was a member of the women's varsity basketball team. Following graduation she entered the Medical College of S.C. and Roper Hospital School of Nursing in Charleston, S.C. She was designated a Graduate Nurse on October 7, 1950. She then took the State Board of Examination and Registration of Nurses in South Carolina and on January 17, 1951 she was certified as a Registered Nurse. She began her Nursing Career at Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown, S.C. as a 24-Hour (on call) Emergency Room Nurse and continued in that capacity until November of 1951 just prior to her marriage to H. Rivers Jacobs, Jr. who had recently returned from the Korean War. Joyce and Rivers made their home in Columbia, S.C. for the next three years following their marriage at Trinity Methodist Church in Andrews. While Rivers was stationed at Ft. Jackson, Joyce worked as an OR Scrub Nurse at Columbia's Providence Hospital where their first child, Deborah Karen was born on Sep. 28, 1952. In July 1954, following Rivers' release from active military duty, the couple moved to Charleston, S.C. where Rivers entered private business and Joyce continued with her nursing career, balancing that, following the births of two sons (Skip and Scott), with being a homemaker and Mother to her three children. During this time she managed to keep her nursing status current by working periodically at several area hospitals and home health agencies. After the children were grown, she settled on home health nursing with her most recent employment being with Doctors' Home Health in North Charleston. During her last six years there, before retirement, she served as Quality Assurance Supervisor until 1997. Joyce was always very professional in her nursing career and demanded high nursing standards from those with whom she worked. Perhaps, the most rewarding phases of her nursing experience were the tough demands of an ER Nurse in Georgetown and her work as a Case-Load nurse traveling throughout the Lowcountry caring for the elderly and disabled, most of whom lived in the sea islands and other rural areas. She was very proud of her Family and particularly enjoyed sharing the progress, and later the careers, of her children. And, she adored her four grandchildren: Hannah, Katie, Emily and Like. She was an avid reader and a very enthusiastic sports fan. Joyce was a faithful member of Old St. Andrews Parish Episcopal Church on Ashley River Road and a member of the St. Mary/St. Anges Chapter of the St. Andrews Women's Auxiliary. In recent years her fondest moments were visiting with or talking on the phone with her four beloved grandchildren. Joyce is survived by a very loving family: Her husband of fifty-four years, Howard Rivers Jacobs, Jr., a daughter, Deborah (Debby) Karen Jacobs Kemp and her husband, Gene of Columbus, Ga., A son, Howard Rivers Jacobs, III (Skip) and his wife, Leslie Turner Jacobs and their two children, Hannah and Luke of Ft. Mills, S.C. a son, Scott Risher Jacobs and his wife, Katherine J. Jacobs and their two children, Katie and Emily of Roswell, Ga. and one sister, Edrie Mae Roberts and her husband, Andrew of Georgetown, S.C., and a number of nieces and nephews. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Hospice of Hartland,1137 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407 or Old St. Andrews Preservation Fund , 2604 Ashley River Rd., Charleston, SC 29407. The relatives and friends of Joyce Tisdale Jacobs are invited to attend her funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at Old St. Andrews Parish Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery. Arrangements by JAMES A. McALISTER, INC. 766-1365. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.
