John Mizzell Obituary

Johnny is my 2nd cousin. Our fathers (Hugh and Alexander) were 1st cousins. I have very fond memories of summer vacations at my Granny and Pappa's, who lived right next door to the Mizzell's. Johnny's house was the green one that sat close to the road with a screened-in porch and a billy goat in the front yard. They said having a goat was cheaper than getting a lawn mower. I will never forget watching Johnny and his dad skinning a freshly-killed squirrel out back of their house. Being a girl, I was too squeamish to get too close, although I did find it very interesting and was totally impressed at how they were able to pull that skin away like peeling off a tight sweater. I also recall the many times Johnny would take time to walk over to Granny's house to say hello and find out how everybody was doing. He called my granny "Aunt Gertie", since she and his paternal grandmother, Bessie, were sisters. Johnny was always so polite and we all loved him. During my summers there, he and his brothers (Press, Stevie and Mark) would get with me, our cousins Johnny and Kay, and my brother Frankie, and we'd play games on Granny and Pappa's big front lawn between the Hydrangeas and the huge Oak tree ringed with Pansies and Petunias. Some of our favorite games were Tag, Keep Away, and Dodge Ball.....especially Dodge Ball, which Johnny was really good at, since he was the oldest, if you don't count our cousin, Johnny Strickler. Even though they were about the same age, Johnny Mizzell was thinner, faster and stronger. Plus, he was amazingly handsome with his jet black hair and dark complexion. As I got older, it became harder and harder to keep my eyes off of him and not on the ball. I envied those Greek genes he inherited from Aunt Helen. When I saw Kay at Best Buy a few days ago, and she told me that Johnny had died, it was a total shock, and I immediately regretted not touching base with him through the years. It seems like just yesterday that we were all so young and invincible. My heart goes out to the family.

My prayers and thoughts are with the family in this time of sadness.Because of my faith I know he will be with our Lord. John was always very kind to me and helped to turn me on to bass fishing at a young age, when all I knew was salt water being fro J.I.

Cyndi and I send our condolences to Marie, John and Jenny. We just saw John a few weeks ago. As we were going out the store he was coming in. We were greeted with a big smile, a witty greeting and firm hand shake. John was a friend, a neighbor and an all around wonderful person. We are saddened by the loss.

I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Johnny. I had not seen Johnny for 50 years - so hard to imagine- yet he has always stood out in my mind when I think back to high school days. He was so friendly - never failed to say hi with such a special smile. My heart goes out to you, his family. You are all in my prayers.

We haven't gotten to know you all well, but Kari has always been proud to be a Mizzell and often spoke fondly of "Uncle Johnny". Please be assured that you all have our prayers and love.

Marie, I was so sorry to hear of John's passing. I spoke with him not long ago. I always immediately recognized his voice on the phone even if I hadn't talked to him in awhile. John had an unforgettable voice and a laugh that made everyone smile. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. So sorry for your loss. I knew Johnny back at James Island High School. He was a fine young man back then.

I have known Johnny since the early Riverland Terrace days. Later he was a electrical apprentice under my father, Ernest Herring. Johnny was always a very personable and kind guy, and loved by many. God's peace and comfort to the family.

My condolences to the whole family, John was a friend, classmate and very smart competitor in the electrical industry. I will miss his laugh and his ability to make others around him laugh. Good fishing in the great beyond my friend, will miss you greatly.

I am so sorry, and I wish you peace. Johnny was my 5th grade crush at Riverland Terrace Elem., and I was looking forward to seeing him at the JIHS upcoming reunion. I'm sure he will look down on all with a smile and will protect his family and loved ones.

Buddy and I are so sorry to hear of Johnny's death. We have known him since students at Riverland Terrace School and James Island High School. While Johnny was at the Citadel, I was a student at Cof C and Buddy at the Baptist College. Whenever we saw Johnny, he would always make us laugh talking of school days and family experiences. He loved his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marie and the children at this difficult time. Johnny will be missed.

He was my friend. my classmate and an all around good guy. There was nothing he wouldn't do for you. Johnny sing your death song loud and go home the hero that you are. I will miss you always.

Johnny was a Terrace Tiger and was Ram Tough. Had the integrity of a Bulldog. He set the example of the good life. His Legacy will carry through the Mizell family for generations. He will be missed by all especially that booming laugh and infectious smile. Our family passes on our heartfelt condolences to Marie and the Mizell family.

I was in M Company at the Citadel with Johnny. What a great guy. Always saw things as they were and always ready to offer humor and encouragement. He will be missed.
