John Gillison Obituary

Rev. Dr. John H. Gillison COLUMBIA, SC - The Rev. Dr. John Harold Gillison, son of The Rev. George Washington Gillison and Mrs. Myrtis Robinson Gillison-Bodison, departed this earthly life on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at his residence in Columbia, SC. Born on October 26, 1938 in Hendersonville, SC, he was the youngest of eight siblings. Rev. Gillison grew up in a loving, nurturing family with many pastors, including his father. As a boy, Reverend Gillison would come home from church and imitate his father in a creative worship service with young cousins and friends. Many of the adults frequently called him "Little Rev." Rev. Gillison received his bachelor degree from Allen University and his Master of Divinity degree from Turner Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA. He also studied at Emory University and the University of SC. Allen University honored him with the Doctorate of Divinity degree in 1975. In 1978, Rev. Gillison was elected President of the Christian Action Council for South Carolina, making him the first African-American to fill this position. He also served on the General Board of the National Council of Churches (USA) and was a delegate to the World Methodist Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. From 1996 to 2014, he served as Presiding Elder of the Edisto District of the AME Church. Rev. Gillison had been very active in the Civil Rights Movement of our nation. One of his greatest inspirations was the opportunity to visit with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his home in Atlanta. Rev. Gillison served four congregations: St. Paul/Piney Grove Circuit in Dixiana, SC; Chappelle Memorial in Columbia, SC; Mt. Pisgah in Sumter, SC and Mother Emanuel in Charleston, SC. He served as Presiding Elder of the Edisto District for eighteen years. He then retired, after fifty-six years of active ministry. To cherish precious memories, Reverend John Harold Gillison leaves his wife of 46 years, two daughters, one son-in-law, two grandsons, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of Bodison step-siblings and friends. Public viewing will begin at 12 noon and end at 8pm on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 - Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc., in Columbia, SC. An Alpha Phi Alpha Funeral Rites ceremony will also be held on Wednesday at 6pm - Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. in Columbia, SC. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2015, 10am - "Mother" Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC. The interment will take place at Zion AME Church cemetery in Hendersonville, SC. To the Gillison Family,
"There was man sent from God and his name was John". When I was privileged to introduce him this was one of the many ways I began the introduction. He was truly sent from God as leader extraordinaire. He was the unrelenting catalyst for my change from a local to an itinerant elder. I consider him the Father of my pastoral ministry. He was very encouraging and supportive and I am deeply saddened by his death. I pray for the comfort of the Holy Spirit to embrace all of you. In his prayers for deceased members he frequently quoted, " There is a land of pure delight where saints immortal reign." He has now joined that great cloud of witnesses.
