John Breland Obituary

BRELAND, John WALTERBORO - Mr. John William "Billy" Breland, husband of Joyce Kinard Breland, died Sunday evening, January 1, 2006, in the Colleton Medical Center. He was 69. Mr. Breland was born in Colleton County, September 27, 1936, a son of the late Lonnie Chaplin Breland, Sr., and Viola Catherine Bishop Breland. He was the paternal grandson of Johnnie Martin Breland and Catherine Buchanan Breland, and the maternal grandson of Catherine Bishop. Mr. Breland was a retired Staff Sergeant with 15 years of service in the Army National Guard in Walterboro, and was also a retired Office Manager with Howard E. Thomas, Inc. He formerly attended Baptist College in Charleston, and was an active member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro, where he was a charter member of the Virgil Ackerman Sunday School Class, and was a member of the Men's Club. Mr. Breland was also a Tree Farmer, and an avid outdoorsman with a special love of Deer Hunting. Surviving, in addition to his wife of 48 years are: one daughter, Myra Barwick, and husband Carroll Barwick, Jr., of Islandton, and one son, Kirk Randal Breland, and wife Judy Pope Breland, of Sheldon. There are three grandchildren, Branden William Barwick, and wife Lesa Murphy Barwick, Kyle Duncan Breland and Randi Leah Breland, and one great-grandson, Austin Taylor Barwick. There is one step-granddaughter, Denise Crowley, and three step-great-granddaughters, Hayley, Gabrielle, and Lynn Crowley. Mr. Breland has two brothers, Homer K. Breland, of San Antonio, TX, and Lonnie C. Breland, of Ruffin, as well as one sister, Maude Crosby, of Carrolton, GA. He was two brothers-in-law, Willis L. Kinard, of Islandton, and Theodore D. Kinard, of Walterboro, and three sisters-in-law, Delores Castle, of Nashville, Blanche Breland, of Round O, and Pearl Breland, of Ridgeland. Mr. Breland is also survived by his former daughter-in-law, Charlotte Hiott, of Walterboro. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Eugene Breland, Helen Ulmer, and Marshall Breland. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 in the Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro, with burial following in the Live Oak Cemetery. Rev. Nelson Stokes will officiate. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at PARKER-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Bethel UMC, POB 407, Walterboro, SC 29488.
