Jefferson Ackerman Obituary

ACKERMAN, JR., J. Mr. Jefferson C. "Jay" Ackerman, Jr., husband of Bette Bacot Ackerman, and formerly of Cottageville, died Saturday morning, at the Hospice of Charleston Hospice Center in Mt. Pleasant. He was 69. Mr. Ackerman was born September 20, 1937, in Walterboro, a son of Beatrice Jordan Ackerman, and the late Jefferson Cohen Ackerman, Sr. He retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard after 34 years of service as a Ship Superintendent, and then worked for Hertz Rental Company in North Charleston. He was a member of the Round Masonic Lodge #270 in Cottageville, and the Charleston Elks Lodge. Mr. Ackerman was an accomplished musician, having been instrumental in the evolution of the music scene in Charleston. He was talented with a wide array of instruments, but possessed a special love for the guitar. Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother of North Charleston, are a daughter, Julie Ackerman of James Island and a brother, Sidney Ackerman, of James Island. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 in the Chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial following in the Ackerman Cemetery at Red Oak. Visitation will be held Tuesday morning, one hour prior to services. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt.
