Jan has been on my mind for a while. We corresponded at Christmas and when those amazing letters arrived I was taken into Jan’s world of travel , family and Charleston. I met Jan in Raleigh NC at a garden conference about cottage gardening. After my lecture she waved to me to come sit with her and handed me a substantial check saying “Suzanne, I would like you to do a landscape plan for my son Paul here in Raleigh. Thus started a lifelong friendship and mentoring when hurricane Hugo hit Charleston Jan‘s Neighbors asked her to help them redesign their gardens as most of the beautiful old oak trees had been filled by the storm she said “I can’t do this but I know someone who can.” When she called I was so honoured to go down to Charleston get a license as an itinerary designer and spend the weekend visiting 8 to 10 gardens with Jan as my assistant. I imagine there were many other people who bonded with Jan in her generous way. I always stayed at her amazing house and we would have a great time. I miss her and will always be thankful she came into my life.

Jan and John were terrific people to have as neighbors. I will always hold dear and appreciate the many wonderful and ingenious things that I was fortunate to learn from them. The chance to catch up with Jan's latest adventures and discoveries on my return trips to Charleston will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences, John.
