I just learned Janie May Mathis was a close friend of my Mother's, Hazel Bowers, when they were growing up. I located Janie May's picture and write-up in my Mother's Memminger school annual for 1933. Evidently her nickname at the time was "Shings". The write-up says: "Janie May is quiet, courteous, sincere, and has a kind word with a smile for everyone. She has stood faithfully by her work in school. We feel certain that she will be successful in the future."
I would love to share a copy of the write-up and annual picture with any family member who would interested.

I met Miss Mathis eight years ago when I was looking for a kitten to give my daughter for Christmas. I answered an ad in the newspaper that Miss Mathis had placed about a litter of kittens she had for adoption. I went to Miss Mathis' home for my 'interview', to determine my suitability for such a responsibility. We immediately became friends, and I came to adopt not one, but two kittens AND the Mama cat. Janie and I remained friends, and her kindness and cheerfulness was always appreciated. Early in our friendship, we met for lunch dates, or I would visit her in her snug home. Later, as my time was strained after the birth of my fourth child, we still kept in touch by phone or through notes. I valued her friendship and kindness greatly, and she will be missed by me, my family, and I'm sure, by all the other people who felt her thoughtfulness and kindheartedness.

I don't remember Janie May (I was too young) the baby brother of James, Mary, and Ruth Nan, but I do remember her name spoken often. My family loved her so. And now she and my mother, Bertha Clyburn, can visit any time they want in the presence of their Savior.

Dear Mary Eleanor and Frank, I find this a wonderful opportunity to send my thoughts of love to you and your families. Our dear Janie May was indeed loved and part of our family right along with Miss Louise. Mary has been sharing with me each week as Janie May has been moving from her home to the apartment etc. I know she had so many caring friends and family to be with her every step of this journey. I can't remember the last time I saw either of you. We were probably children. I guess my most vivid memory of the two ladies we loved so much was their Christmas party with all the goodies Janie May prepared with Louise loving every minute of it. My fondest treat was the "fudge".
There are many more memories of course but most of all their spirit of love for their family and their Lord.
They were always an inspriation to me and now a cherished memory of my childhood.
Love to you, Ruth Nan
