I turned 79 back in June and, as a result, have been spending more time thinking about the past. 1975 was my most difficult year. I was a PhD student at the University of Florida; my wife and I separated in February; my Dad died in March; and in August my wife and I decided to divorce. In the fall Jane and I met and became friends. Her friendship and advice helped me to get back on my feet and do well at the University of Florida. As I thought back on those times I realized how much I benefited from my friendship with Jane. I graduated and went to work as an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota. I didn´t see Jane again for 32 years when she surprised me with her attendance at my inauguration as the President of the College of Charleston in 2007. I was so thrilled to see her again! I might not have made it that far in my career without her advice, counsel, and friendship in 1975!
Rest in peace, Jane...

The Philbrick Family~
I came to know and love Ms. Jane through St. John's Auction and can't begin to imagine the void that will be felt with her absence. They say great things come in small packages and one meeting with Jane and you'd know that were true. She loved life and it showed in her endless energy and her beautiful heart.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time. God Bless and keep you all!

I am in a loss for words. I had Dr. Jane Philbrick as an advisor when I decided to return to school. She was great in getting me back in the saddle, and making me comfortable in returning back to school. Dr Philbrick was a lovely person both inside and out. You can tell when you first come into contact with her. I would like to thank God for allowing me to meet some one of her stature in my lifetime. To the family I would like to send my condolences and prayers to you. Thank you for sharing Dr Philbrick with the students of SSU.

For such a petite woman, Dr. Philbrick gave the world endless compassion and dedication. She was one of the few professors I had at SSU that left a significant positive impact on my educational experience. Not only was she devoted to her students but offered such pride in the university that we could not help but acquire that contagious spirit. To offer your students an exemplary education, dedication to seeing them through their successes, and ensuring a positive experience at their place of education is a rare trait and gift. I can only imagine what she offered her family, friends, and organizations she supported. My prayers are with each of you. We all have another angel watching over us.

Tom and Hunter,
Jane was such a gracious person and great joy to know. I would see her at conferences from time to time as we both worked in the University System of Georgia. She was so very bright and absolutely charming.
My brother, Mike, and his family, Debbie, Elizabeth and Susan Mobley, also shared the pleasure of knowing Jane---she lit up the room. We will miss her and are so deeply sorry for your loss.

What I will always hold as a valuable memory of Mrs. Philbrick is, the wonderful spirit of courage and freedom that she imparted on my daughter, Veronica Rahim, when she was a student at Savannah State University. Mrs. Philbrick didn't just teach my daughter, she actually took the time to "see" her, and to confirm my daughter's own belief in herself...she helped her to fly. And now, we can all be proud of yet another person, whose life Mrs. Philbrick helped to shape.
Many Thanks, and God Speed...

To the Philbrick Family,
Dr. Philbrick was a woman of many facets to me...awesome and faithful professor, academic advisor, mentor, volunteer partner, and friend. It is apparent that she was that and much more to so many others. It was a true blessing to have known and experienced many adventures with her during my time as a student at SSU and beyond! She was smart, spunky, sharp, and sensitive and I know that she is smiling on us all, especially Dr. Tom and Hunter...she spoke very fondly of you both in class and in our personal conversations! :) May you be comforted by the love and support of God, family, and friends.

Dear Tom & Hunter,
I was alerted tonight that Jane had passed away- I'm so very sorry to hear this & of your loss. I have quite fond memories of my cousin, her mother Della Jo & father Paul. Though I've been out of touch and have lived far away in recent years, I knew Jane to have a brilliant mind and deep soul which she shared with family, friends & most providentially- her students. My love to you & support in this time of sorrow.

Tom and Hunter,
You have my sincerest sympathy in the passing of your sweet Wife and Mom. I had the wonderful honor of knowing her for many years as a staff member at Savannah State University, but more importantly we were friends. I became her personal connection for Girl Scout Cookies....Thin Mints were her favorite. I will miss her warm smile and her exuberant spirit. She touched the hearts of me and my daughter, Taqwaa, in a very special way. May God give you the strength needed at this time and in the days ahead. When believers in Jesus Christ pass, we have the assurance of knowing we will see them again. Dr. Philbrick was a believer and you could see that in her words and deeds.

Dr. Philbrick and family,
Jane's passing is truly a great loss. Her spirit and love for students transcended all the self imposed 'barriers' that we have come to know.
I will forever remember her smile, persistence, and sense of responsibility in her commitment to academic excellence and student success.
Know that the Lord only selects the very best to be with him for eternity. We will see Jane's face again.

I first met Jane Philbrick through Tom Philbrick at a dinner they invited me to at George's, one of the Philbrick's favorite hang outs on Tybee Island. Not only did I enjoy the dinner but I had the opportunity to visit with Jane and experience her charming personality, very witty sense of humor and her ablity to put things into a pragmatic perspective. She made me laugh in a time I needed to laugh and in a time I needed to relax. Great memories of a great person. God is holding her in the palm of his hand.

Dr. Philbrick was an influential instructor while I as at Savannah State. Her fair firmness empowered me through her very 'challenging' statistics class.
