James Rion Obituary

James Henry Rion MT. PLEASANT - Funeral services for James Henry Rion, 82, formally of Hartsville, SC and a resident of Franke at Seaside Retirement Community, Mt. Pleasant, SC, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2011 in the Prayer Garden at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Hartsville, SC. The Rev. Fr. Michael Ridgill will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the Rion family. A reception will be held following the service. Memorials may be made to the St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 427, Box 103 Campus Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550, or to the Lutheran Foundation, 1500 Franke Drive, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. Mr. Rion died Wednesday, November 9, 2011. He was born November 4, 1929 in Columbia, SC son of the late Taylor Berry Rion and Montez Reese Rion. He was a graduate of Dreher High School Class of 1947, University of South Carolina Class of 1951 with a degree in Chemical Engineering; a member of Tau Beta Phi and Epsilon Lambda honorary societies. He served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force until 1953 remaining as a member of the USF reserve until 1961. Mr. Rion was employed with Sonoco Products Company of Hartsville; retiring in 1989. He was a charter member of the Pee Dee Sailing Club, where he served as Commodore and later as Treasurer. He was an active member of the Trees for Tomorrow program. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Hawkins Rion; sons-and daughters-in-law James H. "Jackie" (Jean) Rion, Jr. of Sullivan's Island, SC; William L. "Bill" (Donna) Rion of Hollywood, FL; daughter, Amanda Rion Tyner of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Caroline Rion of Charleston, SC; William and Aubrey Rion of Hollywood, FL; Allyson Tyner of Hartsville, SC; brother, Holbrook "Happy" Rion of Columbia, SC. He was preceded in death by his brother Taylor Berry "Tuck" Rion, Jr. of Columbia, SC.
