James Reynolds Obituary

Dr. James C. Reynolds Charleston - Dr. James C. Reynolds of Charleston/Columbia: 1940-2016. There's a tattered picture of Jim Reynolds as a boy in his grandmother's backyard, cheery eyed and proud as he cradles a pet chicken in his arms. Not long after, he would unwittingly eat the pet for dinner, his brothers snickering as they revealed the news to him. It was a small event that would help shape the character of both a great man and a good man. Great in that setbacks failed to deter him, helping him accomplish much in his 75 years. Good in that he was an incredibly generous man with his time and his mind, lending them to whomever was in need. Jim grew up alongside his two brothers in Greenville, SC and attended Greenville High School, where he was probably the only person to go from being a football cheerleader to being a football player-and a MVP at that. He went on to receive a BS from Furman University and pursued post-graduate studies in Botany at the University of South Carolina. He received his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina and entered into Pathology, in short order becoming the Medical Director of Laboratories at Palmetto Health. He held that position from 1973 to 2003 and was renowned for his meticulous methodology and ability to wade through a morass of information, quickly reaching the heart of the matter. He would use this skill to great effect in work and life. His keen insight and wide-ranging knowledge were valuable assets to the many boards and councils on which he served, including the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral-where he was a member since 1970, Chair of the Palmetto Health Richland Board, Treasurer of the Palmetto Health Board of Trustees, President of the South Carolina Society of Pathologists, the College of American Pathologists, the Columbia Board of the First National Bank, Chair of the American Red Cross Board / Columbia, Vice President of the United Way / Columbia, the Advisory Board to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and Chair of the Heathwood Hall Episcopal School Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the venerable AOA Society of Physicians. His passions extended beyond the boardroom and onto the golf course, where he once got a hole-in-one and was constantly, sometimes painfully, working to lower his handicap. He also loved nature, wordplay, history, Winston Churchill, oceanography and working out in the gym. His greatest pursuit, however, was simply making sure that his family was happy. Dr. Reynolds is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Virginia Earle McGee Reynolds; his brother, Thomas Jefferson Reynolds; his three daughters, Mary Louise Montague Reynolds McLeod, Sallie Fielding Reynolds Allen and Virginia McAlister Reynolds Carey; and his grandchildren, Lydia Montague McLeod, Wren McAlister Allen, Lucie Fielding Allen, Jack Reynolds Carey and Matthew Hilton Carey. He is predeceased by his brother, Robert Cummings Reynolds. To say you will be missed is an understatement. To say you were loved and admired by all those who knew you is more to the point. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 17 at 1pm at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia, SC. The reception will be at Satterlee Hall, followed by a private interment in the churchyard. Charitable contributions can be made in honor of Dr. Reynolds at coastalconservationleague.org. Contributions benefitting the Palmetto Health Cancer Center can be made in his name at palmettohealthfoundation.org or sent to: Dr. James C. Reynolds Memorial Fund, C/O Palmetto Health Foundation, Wells Fargo Processing Center, P.O. Box 602575, Charlotte, NC 28260-2575 Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Dr.Jim's presense in this world will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Earlier, we were fraternity brothers at Furman and in later years we re-connected in both Columbia and Charleston. Despite his recent health issues, he always remained positive,ever-accomodating, and real in every relationship he had. The word "courageous" always comes to mind when I think of Jim and the manner in which he dealt with life despite his physical infirmities in later life. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this most difficult time.

His contribution to the medical profession will benefit generations that follow him. His leadership in hospital governance will be reflected in better quality and patient care for decades to come. His faith and living testimony will continue to lift the spirits of so many with whom he shared.
My condolences to his wonderful family, which he so dearly loved and my thanks for their sharing of time in the life of this truly remarkable man. May God grant you peace and comfort you.

A true southern character that everyone loved so dearly because you truly had no choice. He was one of those rare people you meet in life that after meeting you feel the world is a better place. Now we are the lucky ones because Jim's spirit will always be with us so we can keep seeing the world in the best possible light!

Jennie and all Jim's family:
These quotations come to mind: While I was fearing it, it came, But came with less of fear, Because that fearing it so long

All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.~Helen Keller
