James Kernan Obituary
KERNAN, James James Melvin Kernan, 98, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at a local hospital. Born June 9, 1906, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of John Felix Kernan and Mary Elizabeth Melvin. Mr. Kernan retired as Vice President of International Packaging Corporation of America where he worked as an engineer. He was a devout member of Christ Our King Catholic Church. Mr. Kernan was pre-deceased by his loving wife, Virginia Martin Kernan; a son J. C. Kernan; a brother, Jack Kernan; sisters, Maybelle McGorrisk, Mae and Margaret. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Maryanne Kernan and her son, his grandson, James Jay Kernan of Harrison, NY ; William and Gabriela Simons who were considered as family by Mel and, Gabriela like a daughter, and their three children, William, Caroline and Virginia who was his godchild and named after his late wife; nieces Peggy McGinley and her son, John Myers, Connie Sinozich and family, Mary Tobin Cross and her children, Mary Patricia Cross a member of the Catholic lay missionary institute, Miles Jesu, Dr. Richard W. Cross, Mrs. Ceil Ingram, Mrs. Mary Kernan Dalley and Mary Susan Cross and numerous great-great nieces and nephews. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005 at Christ Our King Catholic Church from 10:00A.M. until 12:00 noon with a Rosary at 11:15 AM. A funeral mass will be offered at noon with a reception following in Grace Hall at the church. McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 1515 Rifle Range Rd., Mt. Pleasant is assisting the Kernan family.
