Iva Mitchell Obituary

Iva Glenn Mitchell CHARLESTON - Mrs. Iva Glenn Mitchell, 95, of Charleston, South Carolina (formerly of Fitzgerald, Georgia), died peacefully in Roper Hospital-Charleston on Wednesday, November 21, with family members in close attendance. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 24, 2012, in Fitzgerald, Georgia with the Rev. Dr. Mike Ruffin officiating. Mrs. Mitchell was born July 6, 1917 in Brunswick, Georgia to the late Robert Glen and Irene Dorminey House. Iva Glenn was Manager for many years of Hybernia's, an upscale clothing boutique for women, in Fitzgerald, where she was known for her retail skills and her knowledge of women's fashions of the day. She was a Brownie Scout leader in the 1950's, a member of the Cherokee Garden Club, a member of the Pilot Club, and a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Fitzgerald, where she also taught Sunday school to the very youngest members. Mrs. Mitchell enjoyed day trips and extended travel with the Senior Citizens Group from her church. Enthusiasm for new places and an ever-present smile were trademarks of her presence within this special group. She also cherished traveling with her daughter, Ellaine. Especially memorable was a pre 9/11 trip to New York City. Iva Glenn loved music, especially the Country and Western genre, as well as gardening, sewing, baking her infamous pound cakes for friends and family, and volunteering in her community. She was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan, much to the delight of her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Ellaine & David DeVane of Charleston, South Carolina; three grandchildren and their spouses: Tara & David Filaski of Ridgefield, Connecticut, Ashley & Harry Demosthenes and Courtland & Maggie DeVane, all of Charleston, South Carolina; great-grandchildren: Blythe and Claire Filaski of Ridgefield, Connecticut and Emilie and Isabel Demosthenes of Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Alman Bruna "A.B." Mitchell; sisters: Irene H. Robitzsch, Myrtle H. Brown, Pauline H. Defore and a brother: Robert G. House. The South will miss one of its oldest daughters. Rest in peace under the shade of Heaven's broadest Georgia pecan tree, Iva Glenn Mitchell. With love from your family.
