Herman Tuten Obituary

TUTEN, Herman VARNVILLE- Mr. Herman Ruth Tuten, 88, of Huggin Oak Plantation Road, died peacefully, Thursday, February 19, 2009 at his home in Varnville, SC. Funeral services will be held 4 pm, Sunday, February 22, 2009 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Sandy Run Cemetery. Mr. Tuten was born July 8, 1920 in Hampton County and was a son of the late Luther and Carrie Gooding Tuten. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army. He returned home from fighting on the European front in March, 1945, where he had received 2 purple hearts and loss use of one leg. Other decorations and citations include the EAME Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. Mr. Tuten served ten years as Hampton County Tax Auditor and was known for his watermelon farming. His notoriety for raising various hunting dogs, along with his own hunting skills, afforded him the chance to guide General Omar Bradley on a bird hunt. Mr. Tuten is survived by: his wife of 25 years, Charlotte Nelson Tuten; four stepchildren, Deborah Webb and her husband Dale of Varnville, Daniel Phillips and his wife Denise of Penhook, Virginia, Patsey Nolen of Beaufort, and Louise Brewer and her husband Ross of Daytona, Florida; eight grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Earl, Charlie, Marvin, Red, Ester, Emma, Bernice, Morris, Nolan and Jake. The family has requested that memorials may be made to: Hospice Care of South Carolina, 134 Bells Highway, Walterboro, SC 29488; or to: Sandy Run Cemetery, 2100 Sandy Run Road, Hampton, SC 29924.
