Henry Cheves Obituary

Henry Cheves EDISTO ISLAND - Henry Middleton Cheves passed away February 10 peacefully at home on Edisto Island. He was the son of the late Henry Charles Cheves III and Chilton Cheves Johnson. Born December 18, 1944, Henry went to The Gaud School and Episcopal High School, graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he helped start the sailing team, and got a Master's in Business from The Citadel. Following in the steps of his father and grandfather, Henry then went on to serve in the United States Navy, retiring as a Commander. After years with Charleston Constructors, a family-owned company, and owning a local yacht sales company, Henry forged a new path, going to seminary school at The University of the South at Sewanee and becoming an Episcopal Priest - all after meeting his wife, Susan, at a church retreat. Henry grew up surrounded by the beauty of Charleston, which was later reflected in his watercolor paintings that grace many walls, not only locally, but throughout the world. He painted scenes near and dear to him - the water, marsh, shrimp boats, pelicans, cranes and egrets, stormy skies and sunsets, and his beloved rescue cats, Precious and Cutie. In the last few years, he gave away his paintings, asking people to donate to Hallie Hill local animal sanctuary. He was our wonderful, loving dad, uncle, Ole Man, husband, brother, neighbor, and friend. Henry is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susan Bussey Cheves; children, Hank Cheves and his wife, Sandra, Christy Penders, Millicent Taylor and her husband, Lee, Jason Clemons and his wife, Melissa; and his grandchildren, Middleton, Charles and Langdon Cheves, Emmy and Jack Penders, Hudson and Jackson Clemons, Kennedy and Ella Grace Jordan, Jordan and Owen Taylor; brother, Philip H. Cheves; and sister, Chilton Pope. A private family celebration of his life will be held. The funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, Henry would be moved deeply if donations could be made to Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary at 5604 New Road, Hollywood, SC 29449. I was Henry´s parish administrator when he served as rector of St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Bennettsville. I have several watercolors in my home received as gifts for everything from birthdays to Mothers Days to Christmases. He will always be remembered as my favorite boss of all time. I will be praying for you, Susan.

I was fortunate enough to take the water color class at the church from Henry. I awakened my love of painting he taught me so much. It was not just a painting class we solved the world´s problems every week. He was kind, sometimes a little critical, he would tell me to stop and leave my painting alone before I turned it into a brown mess. But I loved that class and hearing his stories growing up in Charleston. He loved nature and plein air painting. He loved Edisto. I will cherish him teaching me to paint as it became therapy for me. Thank you Henry I imagine you, jane and Alice Ravanel Huger Smith painting away somewhere on a creek of the low country. My prayers to the family.

I never met Henry in person, but we messaged through the I Love Edisto page, and I so enjoyed his paintings. When I would pass the State Park camera, I would wave to him because I know that he watched it frequently. His absence and posts will be missed, and his talent for seeing the beauty around him will be missed even more. Rest in peace Henry.

Henry was a man of many talents. We served together in the Navy and he was a very capable naval officer. Another aspect of his life was his huge artistic talent. His watercolor paintings captured so much of Low Country life and times. He is already missed. Fair winds and following seas, Henry... . Joe Gamboa
