Hazel McGee Obituary

McGEE, Hazel McGEE, Hazel S, 100, formerly of Charleston, SC, entered peacefully into eternal rest December 13, 2008. She is survived by one son, Ralph C. (Mardi) McGee of Tampa, FL; two sisters, Louise Coburn and Dorothy Gordon of Charleston, SC; granddaughters Kathleen (Allen) Rubin of Wenatchee, WA, and Patricia Valentine of Tampa, FL; grandsons Charlie (Lucia) Johnson of Portland, OR, and David (Darla) McGee of Davis, CA; nieces Linda Rourk and Dianne Boersma, and nephew Frank Gordon of Charleston, SC; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph H. McGee of Charleston, SC, and her daughter, Elizabeth Lee Johnson Desrosiers Setzer of Wilkesboro, NC. She was a retired teacher at Charleston Day School and was very active in Bethel Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in choirs, and polished brass with her women's circle. She was a volunteer docent at Middleton Place, gave candle-lit tours of historic homes, and rocked babies in the nursery of MUSC for years. She was always "a lady" in everything she did, even dressing nicely to do her yard work! She loved Charleston and its history and culture, and carried it with her when she moved to an assisted living facility in NC in her later years. A memorial service will be held at 2 P.M. on Sunday, March 29th, at Bethel Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC. Visit our guestbook at www.postandcourier.com/ deaths.

My heartfelt sympathy to "Bud" and all of Hazel's wonderful family. It has been many years since I have seen Hazel, but have always loved her. She and Ralph were second parents to me and I deeply cared for both of them. When I was a very young girl, and they lived down the street from me and my family, Hazel gave me the most beautiful yellow dress I had ever seen! And, she was always caring and had that really classy touch about her. I know all of the "old timers" from Coburg are saddened over her loss. She will always be remembered as a gracious lady! I have wonderfully fond memories of her and Ralph as well as the children. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
