Hal Washington Obituary

Hal Jabez Washington CHARLESTON - In Loving Memory of Hal Jabez Washington September 21, 1953 - November 20, 2025 Hal Jabez Washington, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 20, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Hal is lovingly remembered by his children; daughter, Arianne Seabrook (Derrick), son, Major Bakari Prioleau (Courtney), and daughter, Cassandra Bartolf (Matthew). He was the proud, adoring "Poppie" of Khalan, Erin, and Isadora, who were the lights of his life. Hal is survived by his sister, Jocelyn Edmondson and by many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. Hal was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Drayton, his brothers, Herbert and Mario Drayton, and his sister, Drucilla Drayton. Hal will be deeply missed and forever loved by his former wife and dear friend, Torreah "Cookie" Washington. A graduate of Rivers High School's Class of 1971, Hal served his country honorably in the United States Navy. He worked more than five decades in restaurant management, including over 30 years with Gilligan's Seafood Restaurant and 20 years with East Bay Trading Company. He was well-known for his kindness, professionalism, and unwavering work ethic. Hal's warm spirit, steady presence, humor, and kindness will be missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. A private memorial tribute will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hal's memory to Kids On Point, an organization that reflects his love of community and commitment to helping young people thrive.
