Gene was a blessing to many people. He made positive differences in everyone he met. We will miss our fellowship, our many hours of laughter from his stories, our many shared meals and trips, our times of relaxation looking out onto the river from the comfort of his beloved back porch. But most of all, we will miss his smile and sense of humor and love of family. He was a great man and was dearly loved by us.

Gene was a good friend of mine on Charleston's waterfront, particularly polite, honest and helpful. Different from many waterfront characters, Gene unselfishly gave his all to the betterment of port as a whole, for all to benefit, with special attention given to the ultimate customer -- the shipper, who paid the freight. During his long career with SC Public Railways, as governors and Commerce Secretaries came and went, Gene avoided following political winds and stayed true to himself and his mission. When I spoke with Gene, I always got the unvarnished truth. He was respected by major shippers such as General Electric, Caterpillar, John Deere, etc., and the line haul carriers, Norfolk Southern and CSX. He was great to have on my team as I solicited new business through the port of Charleston. The last major cargo we handled together was at the "Delta" Pier at the Charleston Navy Base -- a huge 300-ton piece of cargo that was too long to make a sharp turn around one of the (antiquated) tracks. Gene ran the (hugely expensive) risk of "popping the rims" off of the SCPRC locomotive wheels but had committed to this shipment. He stuck by his commitment, and we accomplished this very dangerous lift without incident -- with one small "adjustment." As the train was moving along, inch by inch, Gene called out, "Hold up. The Schnabel car has hit the warehouse wall." Then, "Guys, what are we going to do now?" Gene had done his part. We did ours: We literally demolished the corner of the offending warehouse to get the train and its cargo to the pier. A day to remember. What a great, unforgettable guy.
