Eva R. Smith N. CHARLESTON - Eva R. Smith, 92, passed away on Sat. Sept. 5, 2015. Eva was born Dec. 28, 1922 in Griffin, Ga., the daughter of Evelyn C. & Wm. Oscar Reeves. She was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church. She was married to L. Robert Segredi 1943-1955 in Macon, Ga. Eva worked for Southern Bell in the early 1940's and in 1944 she worked at Streitman Biscuit Company (now Keebler's) until 1958. In 1958 she married CPO John A. She and her husband John also enlisted the help of Captain Linden in building a baseball park for the children in Hunley Park. In 1973 when she found out that a minor league baseball team would be locating in Charleston, she called Mayor Joe Riley and offered to work (at any position) for the team. She was hired by Ray Bloomquist as the secretary for their Pittsburgh Pirates minor league team in 1973-74. In 1975 Bill Edwards and Ty Cline, the new owners, promoted Eva to General Manager of the team and was one of only four female General Managers in all of minor league baseball at that time. She served as General Manager again in 1976. She continued working in the front office thru the 1977 season and made many lifelong friends in the baseball families. Eva is survived by her daughter, Lynn Segredi Freshwater (John) of North Charleston and two sons, James R. Smith (Jennifer) of North Charleston, John A. Smith, Jr. (Vera) of Charlotte, NC, 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandsons and 4 nieces. Her brothers, Wm. "Bill" Reeves (Mary) of Macon, Ga., Henry T. Reeves (Dianne) of Cordele, Ga., Hilary B. Reeves (Barbara) of Macon, Ga., and brother-in-law Richard Smith (Theresa) of Kopperl, TX. Eva was preceded in death by her son, Wm. Thomas Segredi, Mother & Father, Evelyn & Oscar Reeves, and her husband of 48 years, John A. Smith. The viewing will be at Carolina Memorial Park on Wednesday Sept. 9 from 6 PM - 8 PM. Dear Lynn, Your mother was a wonderful, sweet woman--a force to be reckoned with, and I loved her. You are so much like her, and I love you too, my friend. Her memory will forever live on as long as you are around, and I pray that you will be around for a long time to come. Your mom is at peace now and healed. She is in heaven with our Lord and Savior, rejoicing with those that went before her. My prayers are with you.

Aunt Eva was such a special lady. We could always count on her to make us laugh - she was such a joy to be around. Now she is laughing with so many others of our family that have gone before. We will miss her very much!

To my mother, my best friend, I will miss you so much but you taught me to be strong. I know you are not in pain, can see clearly and can hear the beautiful angels singing to you now. You are with family who has missed you for so many years, so that makes it a little easier for me to let go. I will think of you every day and all the place we went and the fun we had. Like Dr. Ball said, we were like two peas in a pod, always upbeat and happy. That is how I will remember you momma. I love you! Lynn

A special tribute a very wonderful sister. She was my mother, sister, mentor, and friend. If I hadn't had her, I could have turned out very differently. I will miss you terribly. Thank you for being there for me.
Love always Hilary Reeves

Aunt Eva always put a smile on my face when she visited Georgia. I know she is enjoying heaven and putting a smile on the faces of the ones she loved that went before her.

To the family of Eva Smith,
We will never forget the couple that came to our door 28 years ago to welcome us to the neighborhood. Mr.John and Mrs. Eva spoiled our three children. There were many years of precious memories that we will remember. Ms.Smith was a very good friend to me. She loved her family and often told the stories of her trips to Georgia, the beauty pageants , and the many cruises she went on. Rest now Eva Smith and enjoy your reunion with Mr. John. We will miss you on Carson Drive.
