Edward Capps Obituary

CAPPS, JR., Edward Edward Eugene Capps, Jr. of Charleston, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, September 5, 2006. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama on May 10, 1929 to the late Edward and "Totsie" Capps. Ed graduated from Stark Military Academy in 1947 in Montgomery, Alabama, after which he served two years in the United States Army. He then attended College of Charleston for two years playing basketball for the Cougars. After working as a meat salesman for Armour and Company for 15 years, he continued in that same line of work with John Morrell and Company and retired after serving the Lowcountry for 31 years. Ed was a great outdoorsman who loved fishing and shrimping in the Stono River and Lake Marion with his son, Johnny, as well as fellow friends. He instilled his love for the water in both his children teaching them to water ski and shrimp. He was a charter member of the West Ashley Outboard Motor Club, which was officially incorporated on September 30, 1959. The love of golf was also one of Ed's favorite past times. Many afternoons and Saturday mornings were spent teeing-off at Shadowmoss Plantation. Ed spent many years pitching softball for Hampton Park, Pinecrest, and Ashley River Baptist Church. His reputation was one that he always held close to his heart. He once walked proudly to the mound on crutches shortly after knee surgery because he was "needed" to get the team out of a bind. Needless to say, Mom found out about that incident before he got home. Music was also a large part of Ed's life. He sang at his high school graduation, led the music at local churches, and then became the music director at Pinecrest Baptist Church for 14 years. He was an active member of Ashley River Baptist Church. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Bettiann Finklea Capps, his two children, Randy and Debbie Maatta, and John (Johnny) Edward Capps, his 4 grandchildren, Brett and Vicki Williams, Krista Leigh Williams, Lauren Brittney Capps, Amber Elizabeth Capps, and a great- grandson, Hayden Scott Williams. Relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Eugen Capps, Jr. are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in Ashley River Baptist Church, Friday, September 8, 2006 at Eleven O'clock. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC.,WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, Thursday from Six until Eight O'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ashley River Baptist Church. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.

Bettiann: I have just learned of Ed's death and wanted to write and tell you how saddened I am - however we can certainly rejoice in the fact that he is singing in the Heavenly Choir now! I am sure my dad, Harvey Ammons, was waiting at the gates to greet him. It is my prayer that sweet memories of happier times will sustain you in the coming months.

Dear Capp's family

I am sadden by Ed's passing onto the Lord, but on Earth he was the BEST fast pitch pitcher in the Church League during the sixties.Wow what an arm! Even though I was an opponent I was inspired by his demeanor and sportsmanship. May God bless his family.

Bettianne and family, I can only say that you are in my thoughts and prayer. I am truly grateful that my family was given the opportunity to know Ed and you. He had a talent of making folks smile and at the same time knowing that he was praying for you. What a gift.

Mrs Bettianne, Debbie and Johnny, How he will be missed! My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of loss. But we all know he is in a better place and not suffering. I know daddy is going to miss all of his fishing story phone calls and all of their good times. I have so many fond memories that I will hold close to my heart forever. We love you all! Nancy
