Deepak Bastia Obituary

Deepak Bastia CHARLESTON - Deepak Bastia was born on 9/1/1945 in Cuttack, Odisha, India, and passed away December 1, 2023 in Charleston, SC. Two dates- one whole life. He received a BS from Utkal University, Odisha, an MS from IARI (Indian Agricultural Research Institute), New Delhi, and his PhD in Biology from the University of Chicago. Scientific research was his passion. He was a research fellow at Princeton, Boulder and Yale, a professor at UAB (University of Alabama in Birmingham), at Duke University, Durham, NC, and at MUSC (Medical University of S.C.), Charleston. He was a member of several NIH (National Institute of Health) study sections, chairman of the Gordon Conference on Extrachromosomal Elements. He enjoyed training post-doctoral fellows, and being a guest lecturer at numerous national and international universities and conferences. He liked fishing and photography. He is survived by his wife, Waltraud; and his son, Chandra Mohan (Gosia); and his granddaughter, Anastazja who will miss him. "Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele ..." F. Schiller FOR DEEPAK The chain of life was all that mattered, exploring it was his great passion. Life in its tiniest manifestations was where he hoped to find some answers. Great beauty was not in an open, fragrant flower, nor in a perfect human form. It was the strand, the band that bound all life together, that shaped a universal construct that was sound. -Waltraud

I knew of Dr Bastia's wonderful work on DNA replication while I was a PhD student focused on DNA damage and repair. I was thrilled to meet him when I joined MUSC as an Associate Professor in 2003. He was a very supportive and brilliant friend and advisor.

I am very sorry to hear about Deepak's passing. I first met Deepak in Delhi in 1991 when I was doing my PhD at CSIR-IGIB in the lab where Deepak was a Visiting Professor for a couple of months. We worked together on ter protein, and later, became good friends. Deepak was very fond of Indian sweets; we became a regular visitor to Kamla Nagar sweet shop almost every day after lunch.
Deepak was a gifted scientist and a charismatic orator. He was also very witty and funny. He had a range of jokes on almost every aspect of life.
You RIP master! You have given enough to the field of DNA Replication.

I remember Dr. Bastia fondly as, Doc. I got to know Dr. Bastia at MUSC from when I worked in parking management and would often times transport him to the Drug Discovery building in the morning. He would also stop and talk to me and my co-worker Carlton everyday. We had some great chats as he spoke about science and life in general. He shared his love of photography with me and gave me two prints of his work that I will always cherish. I remember him as a man that loved his family and was very dedicated to his work. His discoveries will go on to help other scientists and researchers. I am so very sorry to hear about his passing. Dee was a great man and I will surely miss our chats. Prayers go out to his family and all who knew and loved this great man.

Deepak and I traveled similar paths. My PhD thesis was 50% essentially similar to his masters thesis and for the next 50 years the overlap continued, he lighting the path for me all along. I had open invitation to go to his lab and hospitality of Waltroud to stay at their house. We talked about once a week till he quietly left science. An extremely bright and courageous person- never hesitated to travel in unfamiliar grounds, if science called for it. He was also never shy to call out any injustice that he confronted. His passion for science and dedication with which he perused it are rare and inspiring. He will be missed dearly.

Deepak was a customer of mine while I worked in biomedical services for his lab. He was a very kind and calm person to deal with. I always enjoyed my times working in the lab for him.
