Christopher Norton Obituary

Christopher "Kit" Norton CHARLESTON - Christopher "Kit" Norton died April 17 in Charleston, SC. He was born August 24th, 1951, in Boston, MA, to Charles F. Norton and Patricia Turchon Norton Peters. Kit graduated from Nobles Academy and then attended Colby College. He left Colby to begin the journey that would eventually take him to Nantucket, where he started playing bluegrass music and where he learned carpentry and custom homebuilding. A sailor since a child, he discovered Charleston by sea and moved to the Lowcountry with some tools, a guitar and boundless energy. He made a long career as a general contractor, leaving his mark with historic renovations in downtown Charleston and custom homes around the Lowcountry. He married and raised his sons on Isle of Palms, sharing with them his love of soccer, skiing, sailing, snorkeling and...always...bluegrass (not to mention Celtics, Bruins, BoSox and Pats). Kit is survived by his sons, Kyle and Sam Norton; his sister, Candy Hitchcock (Fred); his brother, Chip Norton (Jackie); his granddaughter, Violet; and his former wife, Susan. A memorial gathering will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to East Cooper Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 1990, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29465. I'm saddened hearing of kits passing. My condolences to Susan and the children. I met kit in 1990 when I first came down to Charleston I worked on a few of his downtown projects as a carpenter. The first memory I have with him personally was I put my circular saw down with the guard up and it zinged across the floor and he started screaming at me telling me it was antique heard pine and irreplaceable. And I said this suff is junk!! Well that day I got schooled. From that encounter an 20 year friendship and business relationship Florirished. We started a company that year that still Floririshes today. That company is palmetto hardwood floors. He will be missed by everyone that knew him. Great guy, rest in peace brother.
