Charlotte Harrell Obituary

Charlotte Davis Harrell Charleston - Charlotte Marie Davis Harrell passed away on January 19, 2021 at the age of 84. She was born in Norway, SC to Carl and Mary Davis. She grew up in Orangeburg, SC, the 6th of 8 children. She graduated high school in Orangeburg and worked as a photographer at the Times and Democrat Newspaper for two years. Charlotte met her husband, the love of her life, Bob Harrell, at Phillips Shoe Store in Orangeburg in 1954, when she took her little sister to buy her shoes. Bob waited on them. Married six months after their meeting, their union lasted 55 years until Bob passed away in 2010. Theirs was a partnership, building a family and businesses. Their entrepreneurial spirit led to many adventures, which were always shared with family and friends. Starting by selling bagged coal from their car, they built businesses including home and commercial construction companies, an insurance agency, Harrell Farms Pecan Company and Charlotte Harrell's Shop. Charlotte Harrell's Shop grew into five stores that showcased Charlotte's gift for design, merchandising and business. She received many awards and accolades in her life, including Entrepreneur Magazine's "National Entrepreneur of the Year" award. Charlotte was devoted to her family, including her parents and siblings. She provided consistent love and cheer to her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. Holidays were always special, and all were welcome at "the farm" for Sunday dinner. Charlotte was a member of Northbridge Baptist Church. She is survived by her children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bobby Harrell and his wife, Cathy, Trey Harrell and his wife, Amber, their children; Lucy and Ford; Charlotte Painter and her husband, Drew, Lea Harrell Kirkland and her husband, Steve, and their children; Maggie Kirkland, Ellen Kirkland and Mitch Kirkland. So so sad to hear of y’all’s mother’s passing. I have so many fond memories of your family. Charlotte Harrells gift shop in Ashley Plaza Mall was the best. I remember her children growing up helping and working for their parents. I worked next door at Lowell’s. Many many fond memories of both your parent and their three children. Many thoughts and prayers ! ❤

I only had the privilege of caring for Charlotte for three months before her passing but my first day she was instantly my favorite. I would sit with her many times during the evening and we would share a coke, she would often hold me hand and we would talk, and look at magazines, watch movies. One thing that always touched my heart was that almost every single day while sitting with Charlotte she would say to me “I just think you are wonderful.” Charlotte was not just a regular patient in a nursing home, she was truly special and I looked forward to seeing her daily. Charlotte was never once impolite or mean, she always made me feel like I made some kind of difference. I only wish I could have known this amazing woman before her time in the nursing home.
