Charles Sirisky Obituary

SIRISKY, SR., Charles Charles Buddy Sirisky entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 1, 2008, All Saints Day. He was born September 26, 1934 in Charleston, SC to Charles A. Sirisky and Ethel White Sirisky. Buddy attended grammar school at St. Joseph's in old Ansonborough, and graduated from Bishop England High School in 1955. He was united in marriage to Margie Harvey, his beloved sweetheart and soulmate since 7th Grade, at Blessed Sacrament Church on November 22, 1956. Buddy was a passionate, proud and dedicated leader for his church, community, and family. He was a loving husband of 52 years, a devoted father, grandfather, brother and loyal friend. His interests were inexhaustible in every way he could serve people. He never met a stranger and gave everyone an aura in which to shine. He loved the lowcountry especially gigging for flounder. He had a broad taste in music, played the trumpet and loved to sing. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his alma mater Bishop England, where among his many athletic achievements he played on its undefeated football team in 1955. He served as the president of the Triple B club for many years and initiated many programs still in use today. His love of life and people will leave a vacuum in the lives for all those many who knew him, loved him and were touched by him. Buddy is survived by his wife Margie; four sons and two daughters: son, Charles and wife Kay Sirisky of Hollywood, SC, Tommy Sirisky; daughter, Peggy Sirisky-Merrill and husband Cary Merrill; son, Bruce and wife Tracy Sirisky; son, Brian and wife Liz Sirisky; and daughter, Jennie Sirisky-Rhodes and husband Derrick Rhodes, all of Charleston. He was affectionately known as Boompa by his grandchildren, Robbie and Andrew Schwoerer, Margie Rhodes, Sam and Daniel Engel, Madison Sirisky-Merrill, Haley and Hanna Sirisky, Mary Grace and Caroline Sirisky, Jeremy and Nathan Thomson. He is also survived by sister, Carolyn and husband Joseph Brissette of Sanford, Maine; brother, Ronnie and his wife Linda Sirisky of Charleston; beloved aunt, Elsie Sirisky Holtslander, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Buddy was devout Catholic and active member of Blessed Sacrament Church. He was an early member of its Choir and one of its first Cantors. He served with reverent leadership, dedication and personal devotion as Director of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, which recently celebrated its 23rd year anniversary. He was a Captain and Special Services Officer of the Washington Light Infantry and President of B Company. He was an active member of Charleston Elk's Lodge 242 where he was Exalted Ruler for the year 2000 and 2004-2005 Elk of the Year, as well as, State Elk of the year 2004-2005. He also served as South Carolina Elks Association Chairman for the State Major Project supporting the Alzheimer's Association where he pioneered a significant level of contributions on behalf of this noble cause. He was a long time member of The Notre Dame Club and honored as 2002 recipient for Outstanding Commitment to Community Service and Spirit of Volunteerism. He was formerly a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus while living in Augusta, GA .He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Blessed Sacrament Council, He served a 5-year Apprenticeship program in Plumbing and Pipefitting at the Savannah River Plant and attended the University of Georgia where he received his Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Everytime I ever ran into Mr. Sirisky, he greeted me with a firm handshake and hearty one-armed hug around the shouler, "good to see ya, Mitch, how's the family". I shall miss running into him. A good man in every sense.

Dear Margie and Family,
It's hard to believe Charley is gone. Riding to work with him when I needed a ride was always an adventure. Listening to all his plans and projects and the enthusiasm with which he embraced life were inspiring and contagious. My husband E.J. and Buddy went back even longer and E.J. really appreciated Buddy playing taps at the Merchant Marine Veterans of WWII reunions. Charley was truly a good man with so many talents that he so selflessly shared. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Our prayers are with you and your family.

Margie and family,

I am so sorry for your loss; we've all lost one heck of a nice guy. Buddy and I were on the boxing teams together at Cathedral-Holy Name (CHN) back in the late 40's when I was in the Catholic orphanage on Queen Street, and Buddy was my friend. Later we boxed in the 9th grade in the only year BEHS had a boxing program. I still have a News & Courier clipping that mentions his Golden Gloves fight against a kid named Risher. What a competitor Buddy was! He will be sorely missed by so many.

Margie and family it is really hard to sit here and write this as you know it was as just a shock to allBuddy's Elk family as to yours. I thought the memorial service went well and everyone of the PER'S that were touched by Buddy summed up exactly how everyone feels we all loved Buddy and when the Grand Ole Opry comes around next year we will be waiting on a trumpet to sound and Buddy to say go on Ralph get on with the show!

To the family of Buddy Sirisky, I first met Buddy many years ago when we were in the same Boy Scout troop, and then a few years later we were in the same National Guard unit together. I lost track of Buddy and left Charleston in 1971. Later I would see him when I came to Charleston for special Washington Light Infantry gatherings. Buddy always greeted me with a smile and it was as if the years of separation melted away as we reminisced about old times. For several years now we have exchanged emails and I have come to know more of Buddy's devotion to God and his deep love for his family and our country. I shall miss hearing from him. Someone sent me a short video of Buddy singing Taps at one of the WLI memorial services in Washington Park and I have saved it so I can listen to it from time to time to remind me of my friend and fellow soldier, Buddy Sirisky. God bless all of you and may you find peace in your memories of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, soldier and citizen.

Dear Sirisky Family-I could never say or do anything to take away any of the pain you are feeling. Mr Sirisky was one man that for the past 8 years I could always count on to make me see the good that was in the worst of situations. When he came to Dr. Carter's office he left making sure we all knew how greatful he was for us. And in low times of my life he would pray with me and for me. This man loved his family and made me see what a real family should be like. His wife he called his angel. His children his pride and His grands the light in his eyes. I was lucky to know him and feel his love for me too. I only wish I had called or drove by to say hello since leaving Carter's office in April. But I know he is in a better place and If I can ever help any of you in anyway please contact me. Mr Sirisky is the Greatest Man I have ever known.. My love to you all.

To Buddy's family,
I had lunch with some former football teammates and opponents at Jasons on 10-15-08. When I made these plans, I specifically asked that some one contact Buddy and ask him to come. He and I had a short aquaintance when we were about 15 years old, but he was always in my memory as one of Charleston's really good athletes and a great guy.
Buddy sent me an e-mail thanking me for my kind words about him but admitted that he didn't remember me. Nevertheless, Buddy came by Jason's that day and we had a chance to talk and remember others we had known so long ago.
What a gracious man he was - and he was a gracious young man as well.
I will always be thankful for October 15 2008, and for the chance to see Buddy one last time.
God bless you all .

There are no words to express my deep sorrow and no words that could ever describe Buddy's concern for others and his love for his family!
Buddy was there for me when my father died as a result of Alzheimers. He was always there ministering to those in need and always had a kind word to share. He knew no strangers and accepted everyone as family.

Buddy will live forever in our hearts and memories!

My sympathy to the Sirisky family on the death of Buddy.
For the short time I knew him, since Betty introduced us, I had a sense of the great man Buddy is. He did not live with his illness as the key focus of his life; he was able to reach out to others and to loftier ideals; he prayed with bold faith and courage; he lived life to the full; and having done that it is appropraite for him to die. May he rest in peace in the arms of the one he grew to know and love through his faithul, prayerful deveotion to the Eucharist and the Ministry of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. I will treasure now the many lovely presentations he shared with me. Buddy rest in peace. Peace, perfect peace! I pray that the cloud of mourning which now overshadows those who grieve for Buddy will gradually reveal its silver lining to you and all those who miss him most at this time. Fr. John

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As we mourn the death of Buddy; we must remember the legacy he left us. Buddy set the example of what we should be. He loved his God, family, and friends. His cheerfulness and beautiful voice pleased everyone. His ability to serve and lead his country and organizations were admirable . His love of the W.L.I. is appreciated by the members he leaves behind. He always followed the committment"Remember who we are." God Bless the Sirisky family and feel comforted Buddy will always be remembered by his friends.

Dearest Sirisky Family:
We will miss him so...There wasn't a Sunday that went by that he didn't smile and speak highly of our family. We will miss hearing his beautiful voice behind us in church. I will be unable to attend the wake and funeral since I will be out of town for work thisweek. Please know you guys are in our thoughts and prayers. Love Donna DeWitt Wilson and family.

To Margie and all of the family and to my dear Son in Law, Bruce,

Buddy was a deeply caring, generous, wonderful person. Respected and loved by many. I will always be grateful for the "father figure" he became to my Tracey and for the Marvelous Grandfather he was to our grandchildren.
Our deepest sympanty to all the family. Much love and prayers,
Iris and Granny
