Charles Martin Obituary

Charles Jones Martin III Charleston - Charles Jones Martin III, 82, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Nelle Marie Martin entered into eternal rest Sunday, July 22, 2018. His funeral service will be held Saturday, July 28, 2018 in First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street at 10:00. Burial following will be in Flemington Presbyterian Churchyard, Flemington, GA at 3:30 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Charles was born in Hinesville, Georgia on June 21, 1936 to Charles Jones Martin, Jr. and Anne Lucile Stacy Martin. Charles attended and graduated from Bradwell Institute. After high school, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He graduated in 1959 with a chemical engineering degree. Charles served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps after graduation. After his service in the military, Charles went to work for the Olin Corporation at their Pisgah Forest, North Carolina cellophane plant. He lived in nearby Brevard. It is here that he met Nell Marie Teele. Charles and Marie were married on April 8, 1967 at Brevard - Davidson River Presbyterian Church. Marie died November 3, 1969 of cancer. Seeking a career change, Charles moved to New York City and entered the New York University Orthotics and Prosthetics program. Upon completion of this study, he settled in Charleston, South Carolina to work in the field. After a time, he and several partners established an orthotics and prosthetics service business on Meeting Street. He continued to work there until his retirement. Even after his retirement, Charles continued to improve his knowledge of orthotics and prosthetics technology. While attending a conference abroad, Charles was struck by a truck. The result was a number of fractures to his right leg. The leg was subsequently amputated at the thigh. Thus, Charles then went on to use the products he had built and fitted for many years. Charles resided in Charleston beginning in 1976. He was a member and sang in the choir at First Scots Presbyterian Church in Charleston. He enjoyed his time in the choir and with other choral groups. As the opportunity presented itself, Charles traveled extensively throughout the eastern United States. Charles is survived by his older sister, Elizabeth Martin Dominy of Toomsboro, GA; niece, Anne Dominy Metz of Dacula, GA; and nephew Perry Martin "Marty" Dominy of Toomsboro, GA. Memorials may be made to First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29401. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Charlie was my dearest and oldest friend, we met at NYU in 1972 we were both in the Prosthetics and Orthetics program. He graduated and moved to Charleston and went to work for Floyd Brace Co..We spent two years living two blocks from each other and sharing evenings at each others apartments solving the problems of the world , I was 21 and thought ln my naivete that the world would somehow change but Charlie would be the voice of reason and make me think through things with his indomitable insight. My then girlfriend and I graduated NYU, and moved to Charleston and I worked for Charleston Brace and Limb. I learned he was working down the street, and Charlie convinced me to work for Floyd Brace. After about a year and a half we decided to open our business and called it Carolina Orthotics and Prosthetics that was in 1978. We rented a building at 285 Meeting St, and after five years we bought the building that was in 1983. Through the years we carried on until we eventually sold both and settled into retirement. There are so many things I could say about all the fun and heartbreak both of us went have gone through, but it was a good ride. I shall forever miss him. My thoughts and condolences are with his family. So Charlie until the next time, I will see you soon take care.

My condolences to Charles Martin's family and friends. We only met once but we stayed in touch until about a year ago. I feared that he might have taken ill or passed away. It is sad to realize that he is gone. Rest in Peace!

I originally met Charlie when we both sang with the Charleston Symphony Singers Guild. Charlie was also a neighbor on McClain Street and then became friends with my parents when they moved into the home we own on McClain Street. Charlie became a good friend of Dad and was incredibly sad when my Dad died on June 7. My heart is broken for your loss. Charlie was a good man. I wish I could be at his service but I am out of town for a previously scheduled engagement. God's peace and comfort for the family during this time of grief.
