Charles Brightwell Obituary

Charles Slaughter Brightwell WALTERBORO - Charles Slaughter Brightwell, 75, of Walterboro, South Carolina died at his home on September 18, 2021. A native of Lynchburg, VA, Brightwell attended Virginia Military Institute and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. His career spanned 50 plus years of commercial and industrial contracting and professional engineering work. Living in Walterboro for the past 45 years, Brightwell was active in the community. He served in the past as a Board member of the Walterboro/Colleton Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Colleton County Gamecock Club and Dogwood Hills Country Club, a Board member of Lowcountry Community Action Agency, and the City of Walterboro's Building and Review Board. Charlie was a member of St. Jude's Church in Walterboro where he served as a Vestry member and on the Building and Grounds Committee. An avid USC Gamecock fan, Brightwell attended all home football games until his health began to fail. He continued to loyally cheer his Gamecocks on from his favorite armchair. His signature laugh won him many friends and will long be remembered. An avid fisherman, Charlie enjoyed sport fishing in The Keys, Mexico, and Costa Rica; but his favorite spots were in the South Carolina waters near Edisto Beach and Bennett's Point. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Hilda Cox Brightwell and Charles Davidson Brightwell, and by a brother William Archer Brightwell, of Charleston, SC. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gary Hagood Brightwell of the home, and sons Charles "Chad" Slaughter Brightwell (Julie) of Greenville, SC, and Andrew "Drew" Hagood Brightwell (Leigh) of Chapin, SC. He was the proud "Poppa" to four grandchildren: Harris McMinn Brightwell, John Davidson Brightwell, Caroline Lee Brightwell, and Mary Folger Brightwell. Memorials may be made to Saint Jude's Church, 907 Wichman Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to the charity of one's choice. The relatives and friends of Charles Slaughter Brightwell are invited to attend his funeral service which will be conducted 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, September 23, 2021, from Saint Jude's Church, 907 Wichman Street, Walterboro. The Reverend Fr. Newman Lawrence, Officiant. The family will receive friends following the funeral litany in Skardon Hall of Saint Judes Church. A private family committal service will be held at Hagood Family Cemetery in Pickens, South Carolina. Arrangements by: THE BRICE W.
