Charlene Agnes Creel
Cottageville, SC - Mrs. Charlene Hales Creel, age 57, of Cottageville, entered into eternal rest safe in the arms of Jesus on Sunday morning, January 18, 2026, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro with her devoted husband at her side following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born January 10, 1969, in Summerville, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Charles Albert Hales, III and the late Rosalee Muckenfuss Hales. Charlene, also known as "Babe", "Hun", and "Sugar Plum", was a loving wife to her husband and a loving mother to her children. Charlene loved everyone and strived to bring the best out of those she knew. As the loving wife of The Reverend Chief John Glenn Creel, MD, she stood faithfully at his side as he served as Chief of the Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe, was a well-known fixture in her husband's medical practice, Walterboro Adult and Pediatric Medicine on Spruce Street; and was faithful in her ministry at Little Rock Holiness Church where her husband serves as Pastor. She was a dedicated member and First Lady of her beloved church for over 25 years after faithfully serving our Lord Jesus Christ at the Edisto Indian Church of God in various positions for ten years.
Charlene was a gifted exhorter, edifier and comforter as she led many worship services. She loved and served the Lord and others faithfully after surrendering to Jesus as a teenager. She was a great singer. She was also a great decorator and was instrumental in arranging flowers for many who passed this way before her bringing support and comfort to families. She will be missed as she has no doubt been called to prepare the marriage supper of the Lamb in preparation for the soon great catching away and home-going of the bride of Christ. She wants her family to know that they can see her again as long as they are "in Christ" at their home-going or His coming.
Charlene leaves behind her beloved husband of 39 years, The Reverend Chief John Glenn Creel, MD, also known as "Sugar Plum", "Gus", or "Shug"; two sons, John Charles "JC" Creel, Caleb Lee "Bub" Creel; one daughter, Shaleen Gwynn Rose "Preshy" Creel; one grandson, Caleb Lee "Toot" Creel, Jr.; and her husband's parents, Johnnie N. Creel and Rosalee Creel. She is also survived by one brother, Marshell "Sparky" Muckenfuss and his wife Beverly; one sister, Lindagale Scott and her husband Daniel "The Scott's"; a special niece, Chelsea "Earlybird" Scott along with her family; as well as many other nieces and nephews; special friends, Wendy "Shugg" Haigood and Elaine Sweat; as well as Sheila Muckenfuss, Barbara Davidson, Laura King, Heather Doyle, Mayla Tracy, Arlene Martin, Donnie Creel, Sr. and Roger Robinson, who dedicated their service to the Creel family and supported the care of JC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Hales, IV and James Mitchell Davidson; niece, Kyle Hales; nephew, Gabe Hales; their dedicated family caregiver, Marion "Mary Jane" "Mimi" Muckelvaney; and special friends, Wes Haigood, Cindy Myers, Lisa Scott, Doreen Creel, and Mamie Fryar.
The Relatives and Friends of Mrs. Charlene Hales Creel are invited to attend her Homegoing Service which will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, January 23, 2026, from Little Rock Holiness Church, 20991 Augusta Highway, Cottageville. Interment will follow in the churchyard.
The family will receive friends from 6 o'clock until 8 o'clock this Thursday evening at THE BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATORY, WALTERBORO CHAPEL, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro, 843.538.5408. Visit the registry online at: www.briceherndonfuneralhome.com.
