Carol Going Obituary

Carol Ione Christensen Going CHARLOTTE, NC - Carol Ione Christensen Going, 93, died peacefully at home in Charlotte, NC, on June 24, 2024, with her devoted family by her bedside. Carol was born July 12, 1930, in Bottineau, ND, to the late Peder and Kirsten Jensen Christensen. She graduated from the North Dakota School of Forestry and moved shortly thereafter to Denver, Colorado, where she met her husband, Robert E. Going, while working at Fitzsimons Army Hospital. Despite growing up on a wheat farm in North Dakota, Carol dreamed of traveling the world. Little did she know that she would begin her married life in Bedford, England, followed by stints in Denver, Colorado; Chicago, Illinois; San Francisco, California; Gainesville, Florida; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Atlanta, Georgia; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Singapore; Charleston, South Carolina; and Charlotte, North Carolina. Carol was the consummate homemaker while her children were at home, then worked at Bryn Mawr College, Emory University School of Nursing, The Centers for Disease Control, and the GAO in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother who made frequent trips to visit family, lending a helping hand with childcare and enthusiastically spectating at any sporting or artistic event in which her grandchildren were participating. She was known for her wit, warmth, and kindness and was a true "people person," who was genuinely interested in everyone she met. She loved a boisterous game of Rummikub, participating in fitness classes, and frequent travel to all parts of the globe. Carol is survived by her five children: Robert E. "Chip" Going, Jr. (Vilija) of Atlanta, GA; Kimberly G. Booher (Eddie) of Charlotte, NC; David L. Going (Beth) of St. Louis, MO; Timothy K. Going (Carmen) of Peachtree City, GA; and Karin K. Pellerito (John) of Vail, CO. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, Nick Going, Gabrielle Giddens, Kendall Booher, Cameron Booher, Bailey Booher, Wes Going, Trent Going, Berklea Going, Andrew Going, James Going, Andrew Pellerito, Christian Pellerito, Caroline Pellerito and four great-grandchildren: Henley, Hudson & Hope Going and Jack Giddens. Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband and her sisters: Ada M. Olsen and Hazel L. Belcheff. Carol's family wishes to express deep appreciation to her wonderful caregivers: Robyn Johnson, Kiam Seymour, Tone'Ya Bryant, Dazia Covington, and Felicia Coleman, as well as the staff and administration at The Sharon at South Park who lovingly cared for Carol during the last chapter of her life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church TV Ministry (www.firstpres-charlotte.org) or St. Matthews Lutheran Church (www.smlccharleston.org). A service to celebrate Carol's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Trade Street, Charlotte, NC 28202, with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. The service will be live-streamed at www.firstpres-charlotte.org/watch/ for those unable to attend in person.
