Carl Compton Obituary

COMPTON, Carl MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Dr. Carl E: Compton, 85, died Monday, December 4, 2006 at Grand Strand Healthcare Nursing Home in Myrtle Beach, SC. Born in Mebane, NC on August 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Charles B. and Ada Horner Compton. He graduated from Mars Hill Junior College and Wake Forest College, Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated with a Doctor of Theology from Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY in 1949. He served as a World War II Navy Chaplain between his post graduate degrees on the USS Shelby, APA105. Dr. Compton was most recently Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, SC, after serving faithfully as its pastor from June of 1949 until December of 1986. Other than fulfilling preaching requirements for his divinity degrees, First Baptist Church was his only full-time pastorate. Dr. C , as he was lovingly known, was predeceased by his inspirational wife, Martha Stafford Compton, in 1996, after 52 years of marriage. Surviving him are four children: L. Keith Compton and wife Cherie, of Myrtle Beach; R. Carl Compton and wife Anne, of Rock Hill, SC; Kittilee C. Purvis and husband Mike, of Bluffton, SC; and Charles S. Compton and wife Tommie, of Bennettsville, SC. His sister, Marie C. Monti, lives in Greensboro, NC. Dr. Compton also leaves behind nine grandchildren; Matt Compton, Josh Compton, Martha Compton Vess, Cindy Compton, Chris Hanna, Laura Hanna Huggins, Kirk Hanna, Jason Hanna, and Staci Purvis, fourteen great-grandchildren, and a loving congregation at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, SC. While pastor of First Baptist Church, Dr. Compton made an indelible imprint on Myrtle Beach. He was very involved in the greater community. For many years he served as Fire Department Chaplain, on the Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad, the Housing Authority, the Chapin Library Commission, the first Planning and Zoning Commission and many other local boards. In 1979 he was the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. He served his denomination as president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, a Sunday School curriculum writer for the Southern Baptist Convention and as a member of the Connie Maxwell Children's Home board of directors. When Coastal Carolina University was still a part of the University of South Carolina system, he served as an Associate Professor of Religion for 12 years. However, his greatest love was Christ, and because of that he became known as church builder. Surfside Baptist Church, Socastee Baptist Church, Ocean View Baptist Church and Forestbrook Baptist Church were all begun as missions of First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach under the leadership of Dr. C . Family Visitation will be from Wednesday, December 6, 2006, from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at MCMILLAN AND SMALL FUNERAL HOME, 906 67th Ave. North, Myrtle Beach, SC. The Memorial Service will be Thursday, December 7, 2006 at 2:00PM at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, 500 4th Ave. North, Myrtle Beach, SC, with entombment to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway, SC. Keith, Tried to send my condolences last week but either my computer or the Sun News system was screwed up. I am one of the many blessed individuals who knew your father and more importantly knew the great heart that was in his body. What a great example he was for all of us. I never saw him flinch in his faith. He was always very confident in who ruled this world. Please express my regrets to Charlie. I remember him fondly from days gone by. Cherish the great memories you must have and smile.

Dr. Compton was a dear role model for us pastors...Martha was a great inspiration to us pastor's wives. We treasure our relationship with them and celebrate his Homegoing with you. We are praying for the family that you will feel God's love and peace as you go through these days of loss.

Dear Compton Family,

Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Dr. Compton was truly part of the "Greatest Generation." We will long remember his service during WWII as a Navy Chaplain. As South Carolina Baptists we have been blessed by his leadership and service to the Lord Jesus Christ. I can remember visiting FBC, Myrtle Beach many years during summer vacations with my family. Dr. Compton made an impression on me even as a small boy. He always took the time to greet the out of town guests even as he did his own people. Our prayer is that while you find yourselves in the valley, you will be comforted by the Shepherd! May God bless you in the days to come.

He had such a rich history and touched so many lives, I know your hearts are bursting with pride yet sorrow has made its way in, but knowing that he is in such a wonderful place now must give you some comfort. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

How to say in a few words the impact Dr. C had on my life. Who I am today is in large part because of the way God used him to show me what being a minister means. When I heard the news I was sad for us, but so happy for him. May the peace of Christ, which passes understanding, be with you all. Love and Prayers, Pam

I too grew up at First Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach under the teaching of Dr. Compton. My mother used to tell me stories of how they met in the Compton's home before the church was built and I as an infant slept on their bed while church was going on. Dr. Compton and Mrs. Compton were rocks for my mother during the most difficult time in her life and she never forgot their kindness. I am sure that along with Mrs. Compton, my mother was standing on the banks of glory to welcome him home. Take comfort in knowing that he is where he worked his whole life to be.

Dear Keith, Carl, Kittilee, Charlie and all those who feel the loss of a great man,
Heaven is certainly rejoicing as it has received one of the greatest. Dr. C was present at all the great events of my life.Since age 5 he taught me, set an example for me, spoke the words that led me to accept Christ as my Savior, baptized me, and performed my wedding ceremony. He and Mrs. Compton even attended a reception honoring the baptism of my oldest son at Kingston Presbyterian Church in Conway.
I pray that all who feel the loss of Dr. C will allow their memories of him to comfort them in this time of sadness. He will surely be missed but will never leave our hearts. What a wonderful time to enter the gates of Heaven...when the birth of Jesus is being celebrated! I am sure he is right in the midst of the festivities.

Keith,
My deepest sympathies in the loss of your father. It is very sad to know that eventually we must live our lives without those that have given us some of our most memorable moments. However, we rejoice in the knowledge that their suffering has ended and that they are sitting with Jesus and all of those loved ones that have gone on before them. While our world is a little dimmer by the loss of Dr. C we know that God's heaven is brightened by his arrival. I pray that Gods hand will reach down and touch your heart to ease the pain and to begin the healing process for you and all of your family.

December 5, 2006

Dear Kitty and family:

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Compton. He was a wonderful, caring person that I admired so much growing up on Oak Street just down from First Baptist. Dr. Compton baptized me twice, married my husband and I and presided over both of my parents funerals. I remember when Randy and I were getting married, we had to meet with Dr. Compton a day or two before the wedding. We were both young and nervous about meeting with him and getting a sermon on the pros and cons of marriage. I will never forget Dr. Compton's parting wisdom to us just before we left his office. He said "Randy and Peggy, never go to bed angry.... and NEVER, EVER wake up grouchy...I always leave her sleeping on the couch!!". 28 years later Randy and I are still laughing about that and telling that story.

Just wanted you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. Dr. Compton will live forever in our hearts.

Peggy.

As a small boy growing up in Myrtle Beach (until I moved to North Myrtle Beach in the 5th Grade), I cherish and have fond memories of Dr. Compton and his special family (Mrs. Compton, Keith, Carl and Kitilee). In fact, Carl, Jr. and I were best friends when we attended the old Myrtle Beach Grade School where the Myrtle Beach Post Office sits today. Dr. Compton was my family's minister and the one who baptized me at 9 years old. My entire family (living and passed) and I admired, respected and looked up to him as he ministered and touched our hearts for many years. It is an understatement to say that he was loved and respected by all. He will never be forgotten. He placed his mark on many people, his country (as a veteran) and the community he lived and loved so much. Every time I pass the First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, I think of Dr. Compton and always will. As we grieve and celebrate his life, thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and the church family. We can now take comfort knowing that Dr. Compton is in God's Loving Care. Wow, God really got a good one in this special man!
