Betty Wills Obituary

Betty R. Wills Charleston - "Betty" Mary Elizabeth Rosser Wills passed away on Sept 16, 2022 at the age of 96. She was born in Chattanooga, TN to James Ralph Rosser and Louis Brownlee Rosser and spent her childhood years in Lafayette, GA. She was a graduate of Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. She was married to the late Thomas Jackson Wills III of Washington, Georgia. Jack was an Annapolis graduate whose tours of duty included California, Guam, Florida, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Together they raised three challenging sons. Their final tour of duty was Charleston, SC, where Betty first taught art history at the Baptist college. She then spent many years teaching social studies in the lower school at Porter-Gaud School. In her 20 years at Porter-Gaud she touched the lives of many students. In 1982, the Porter-Gaud yearbook was dedicated to her - the only time a lower school teacher had been so honored. During her tenure at Porter Gaud, the "Betty R. Wills Citizenship" was created in her name, not to honor the most academically gifted or the best athlete, but the student who demonstrated the best qualities of good character, honesty, and kindness. Betty was an accomplished artist and pursued a love of painting her whole life. Her family is left to cherish the work she created. Her love of children was reflected in her devotion to her family. Betty was preceded by her husband, Thomas Jackson Wills III and her son, James Rosser Wills (Vickie). She is survived by her two sons, Thomas Jackson Wills IV (Julie) of Charleston, SC and Mark Jordan Wills (Pam) of Augusta, GA., six grandsons and one granddaughter and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Stuhr's Funeral Home, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant from 5-7pm. The Funeral will be Thursday, Sept. 22, at 10:30 at First Scots Presbyterian Church at 53 Meeting Street with interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery, 70 Cunnington Ave. Memorials may be made to First Scots Presbyterian Church. I have just learned of the death of my colleague and friend and am so sorry. We taught together for five years in the Lower School at Porter Gaud. She was a mentor to me when I first joined the faculty. I have never known a kinder, gentler person than Betty. I know all of her family have many wonderful memories as a source of some comfort in her passing. My condolences to all of her family.

Betty was my grandmother. When we spoke, she always made me feel like she had all the time in the world for me. Conversations with her were a joy because she was kind, open, and endlessly curious. She is a beacon, and her absence amplifies how fortunate I was to have her in my life. I will think about Betty always.

Sending loving thoughts and prayers to the family. Betty was simply a treasure to me and my mother, Mary Alice. I loved listening to their stories from their times together growing up as cousins. This picture is the last time they were together in 2019.
Much love to all of you! I pray you find much comfort in the memories of such a special lady and a life well lived.

I still recall sitting at the table next to her and Tom in a local restaurant several years ago . Although we had not previously met her genuine warmth was palpable and we conversed as comfortably as old friends. May her memory continue to be a blessing to Tom and family during their bereavement .

Sending words of sympathy to the family of a lovely, warm, intelligent lady, who I had the pleasure of knowing and partnering in the game of bridge. I will never forget her kindness.
