Barry and I had been friends since our university years, got together at least once a year, and spoke regularly on the phone. He was a steadfast friend with an understated sense of humor, and was a lot of fun to spend time with. I attended his wedding in Charleston and was delighted to meet Sarah. And it was special to have her mother conduct the wedding ceremony. At this moment of loss and grief, I take comfort in knowing that Barry and Sarah had a great life together, which included many notable and exhilarating international trips, to Mexico, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Scandinavia, and beyond. The world was their oyster many times over. They were bicycle-riding buddies extraordinaire.
Barry was an accomplished physician and medical educator, who was keenly devoted to his patients. And Barry was a very caring and involved father to Mike and Amy, going the extra yard for their benefit whenever he needed to.
Barry maintained the highest ethical standards and a strong sense of moral duty, as exemplified by his becoming a Conscientious Objector during the Vietnam War. It was an arduous process to be granted the CO status, but Barry persevered and succeeded, and then performed his duties admirably.
At the same time, Barry entertained me frequently by playing his 12 string guitar, specializing in such America hits as A Horse With No Name, and Ventura Highway. I can still hear him play those tunes, and smile.
Barry was the best! I will miss him deeply.

Dr. Hainer was my daughter's doctor for many years at MUSC. She is developmentally disabled yet he was patient, kind, thorough and sweet with her throughout her visits. He exemplified the best in medical care and we were so fortunate to have him as her physician. Nancy and Charles Banov

Barry Hainer was the first physician I met when I interviewed at the Department of Family Medicine residency program in 1981. I was so impressed with his intellect and grasp of medicine and was assured that family doctors could be as smart as anyone. I remember being sad when he left to become residency director at ECU in 1984 and thrilled when he confidentially told me at a North American Primary Care Research Group meeting a few years later that he was returning to Charleston. During the 30+ years that we worked together I continued to be impressed by Barry's keen diagnostic skill, professionalism, and warmth. His devotion to his Department and colleagues was evident when he stood up and accepted Dean Pisano's request to be the interim Department Chair. I will miss Barry Hainer, he was one of my two mentors at MUSC.
