There's never a minute that goes by that I don't think of my lil sister. When she passed, I'd pray to receive a message that she was at peace. While Mommy and I packed her apartment, on her bookshelf I noticed a one year personal prayer book. A page was folded, the prayer read: "Keep us, Lord, so awake in the duties of our calling that we may sleep in thy peace and wake in thy glory". The date of the prayer was January 11th, the day God called her home. I felt, here is my sign! She was letting me know that she is at peace. Mom and I are truly blessed for having her in our lives. The way she lifted us up, inspired us and taught us will stay with us for the rest of our lives. We also Thank God for our family and supportive friends.
Avis, please continue to guide me so that one day we will meet again and REJOICE!! WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU TERRILBY! Mommy and Dee

MOMA DOT AND SISTA DEE,
MY HEART IS HURTING RIGHT NOW FROM THE LOSS OF MY DEAR SISTER AND FRIEND. MY PRAYER FOR THE BOTH OF YOU IS THAT GOD WILL COMFORT AND KEEP YOU. EARTH HAS NO SORROW THAT HEAVEN CANNOT HEAL. I HAD HIGH HOPES THAT AVIS WOULD PULL THRU THIS LIKE SHE HAD DONE ALL OF THE OTHER TIMES, BUT GOD HAD A DIFFERENT PLAN FOR HER. ONE THAT WE MAY NEVER QUITE UNDERSTAND. THEY SAY TO BE ABSENT FROM THE BODY IS TO BE PRESENT WITH THE LORD. WHO WOULD NOT WANT SUCH A WONDERFUL GIFT AS THAT. PLEASE KNOW THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR YOUR FAMILY AND WILL ALWAYS BE THERE FOR YOU. WE HAVE BEEN FRIENDS AND SISTERS FOR YEARS. IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE KNOWING MY FRIEND AVIS. I THANK GOD FOR ALLOWING HER TO BE APART OF MY LIFE. SHE WAS ALWAYS A GOOD FRIEND TO ME. I LOVE YOU GUYS AND WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU IN CONSTANT PRAYER.

Ms. Dot and Deidre,

I can truly say that my life was enriched because of Avis. Avis taught me that you could achieve anything if you belived that you could. She was my anchor, she was my pillar of strength. I watched her through the years with her illness reach all of her goals. She never gave up. Ms. Dot you are an excellent mother and Deidre you are a wonderful sister. What we are is God's gift to us. What we become is our gift to God. Avis was our gift from God and she was an angel sent to touch our lives. I will truly miss my classmate and friend.... It is amazing to me how we started in kindergarden, went thru elementary, high school, etc., TOGETHER. It is rare to have the opportunity to grow up with the same loving and spiritual friends, and still maintain the closeness we all still share today. Avis is a part of a special group of friends that will miss her dearly. Dee and Ms. Dot, it is an inspiration to me, to have had the chance to witness the love and support you gave to Avis. I know she is in good hands, and will be with you always. I couldn't wish for a more perfect guardian angel for you two. :) - Love always, Terry

To the Duncan Family,
Avis and I worked together at the Naval Hospital. You are in my prayers and I would like to send a few words of encouragement.
Just like the sunset
At the end of the day I just want to take a rest and taste the moment.
I want to ponder what this life to me has offered.
Just like the sunset
I enjoyed single hood to the fullest.
Freedom - and I was so into it.
Just like the sunset
My life has been planned and set to what I thought was best.
Just like the sunset
I’ve moved from one point to another and have encountered giggles and hurt.
Just like the sunset
There were goals I had always wanted and received it.
The waiting will be over soon and the longing will end.
Just like the sunset
In my heart I’ve found “GOD’s HOME” overflowing in love and passion.

To Jackie, Shawn, Duncan Family. I met Avis years ago through Mildred Fields and her family. During that time, I found Avis to be a loving, sweet, gentle young lady. Several years later our paths cross again at a Christmas celebration. I reminded Avis of who I was and where we first met. Avis gave me a hug, her gentle manner, her beautiful smile was the same. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Avis in person,I knew her and followed her life through the eyes and heart of my cherisied friend Deidra, the sister who loves her beyond what words can describe. Very few days went by that Dee didn't talk about her love for Avis and how many 'stories' they had and how many memories they shared. I'm sure this is true for the entire family. Avis was a very special Angel, with God now, living the good life. I hope the 'stories' and memories will help the family through these difficult sad days as you say your good-byes. She is in a better place and will see you again...you are in my thoughts and prayers

My deepest sympathy and love are extended to Mrs. Dot, Deidra and family.
To Avis
Some people come into our lives
and leave to soon.
Some people move our souls to laugh and dance.
Some people awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom.
Some people make the world more beautiful to live in.
Some people stay in our lives for awhile, then go, leaving footprints on our hearts
And we are never, ever the same.
