Alyce Bruder Mathewes
Anderson - Gerhardine Alyce Bruder Mathewes, 91 passed peacefully to join her mother Gladys, father Albert, brother Albert, and son Hank on February 16, 2026, in her home in Anderson, South Carolina.
Alyce was born on December 30, 1934, in Charleston, South Carolina. She attended local Charleston schools and MUSC studying to become a Registered Nurse. Alyce was a single parent to Alyce Joy and Hank and was fiercely loyal to her children and family. She was a devoted Episcopalian and active parishioner of the congregation at St. James Episcopal on James Island.
Alyce spent most of her 91 years in Charleston and was active in Beta Sigma Phi at the local, state and national levels. She served on the League of Women Voters, was a member of good standing with the Association of Operating Room Nurses and participated in the St. Martha's Chapter at St James Episcopal Church. She was an avid reader, sewer, and a member of many James Island bridge groups.
Alyce had an astonishing journey that was guided by her decisions and commitment. She is already missed by her daughter, Alyce (Aly) and son-in law Bill, her seven grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and by the many friends and family that remember her fondly and with love.
Alyce's Celebration of Life will be on April 18, 2026 at St James Episcopal Church at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the charity of your choice.
