Albert Benjaminson Obituary

Albert Benjaminson CHARLESTON - Albert Benjaminson, 95, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Florence Galinson Benjaminson, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2013. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Albert was born June 6, 1918, in Bronx, New York, son of Morris Benjaminson and Johanna Mintus Benjaminson. He was an electronics engineer and a veteran of the US Navy. Albert traveled the world, built a sailboat and family home and painted family portraits and other paintings. He is survived by his daughter, Wendy Hoagland and her husband Ken of Arlington, VA; two sons, Eric Benjaminson of Eugene, OR; and Peter Benjaminson and wife Susan Harrigan of New York, NY; five grandchildren: Anne White Benjaminson, Emma Claire Benjaminson, Molly Rebecca Benjaminson, Jack Benjamin Hoagland, and Henry David Hoagland; one great-grandchild, Leo Naarden. I worked with Al at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, CA, from 1966 to 1976. Al was like a "dad" to me, helping me evolve from a "wet behind the ears" fresh-out physicist to a mature engineer. Al was incredible at solving all types of problems--math, electrical, daily living. After Al retired from HP, he and Florence moved to Oregon. My first wife, Pat, and I visited them in Oregon. Al loved the outdoors, his goats, and the freedom of his farm. We also visited them briefly in Crystal City, VA, after they moved there. Al once took a sabbatical from HP and spent nearly a year on a kibbutz in Israel in the mid-1970s. While there, Al worked on an externally chargeable heart pacemaker. Al once went out on an oil-research ship that was evaluating a quartz crystal pressure sensor our group had developed at HP. While on the ship, the crew thought they had lost the equipment they were towing behind the ship. Al quickly calculated the stress on the cable towing the equipment and verified the equipment was still attached! I bought Al's 1963(?) Triumph Spitfire from him around 1975 and drove it for several years. Al painted a portrait of me on a sheet of aluminum! I feel so guilty that I didn't stay in touch with Al over the ensuing years. He was a true friend and I think of him often.

Wendy, I am so sorry to read of your Dad's passing. I hate this part of growing up. I did not know your parents very well, but I knew they were nice because you were so nice. I am so glad I "see" you on facebook from time to time. I always wondered what became of you and your family after you moved. Your family story is most interesting.
