So sorry about the loss of your brother. It is hard to say goodbye to people we love, and we pray for strength and healing for you and your family.

Back in the day (mostly the 1970s) I went toe-to-toe with Bill in many debates, mostly political, and always emerged feeling a little bruised but always better informed. I've never known anyone with a mind quite like his. He was brilliant, quick-witted and ferociously informed on so many topics, and could bring them all together into a single point, just like that. For his part, he once told me that he always left these discussions embedded with shrapnel, which surprised me, as I'd assumed him impenetrable to any insult I could inflict. I should have asked what he meant by that statement, because I've always wondered. I reconnected with Bill for a while in 2009 while researching the Lowman lynchings and, during these months, glimpsed the extent of his knowledgeon on local history. I learned so much from him. I only wish I'd known him better over all these years, for --- despite his capacity to sometimes intimidate and maim in debate -- he was totally fun to joust with. He was fundamentally quite a kind fellow, and he showed both me and my family special respect on a few key occasions. That, I''ve never forgotten. The world feels like a lesser place, just knowing that he's gone. I regret that it's been 7 years since we spoke, and it saddens me to know that this is it. My deepest condolences to his family and all who loved him.

Bill was a unique individual. I am grateful that I knew him over the years and regret seeing him leave us so soon. His acerbic wit, quick laugh and love of learning will always be remembered.

I knew Bill from junior high, lost him for a few years, and connected again on Facebook. He was such a bright light, so smart, well-read and fair, I loved talking with him. I have been so sad since Steve told me he was dead. I feel privileged to have reconnected with him. I know his family will miss him much more than I will. I'm sorry he's gone.
