Leo Mainini Obituary

Leo Mainini
AIKEN - Leo Kenneth Mainini, 84, of Margate, Florida and Aiken, South Carolina, passed away on December 21, 2018. Mr. Mainini was born and raised in Quincy, Massachusetts and attended schools there until the Korean War, during which he served as an Aviation Machinist's Mate. Upon honorable discharge, he returned to school at the Newman Preparatory School in Boston and completed the studies required for his GED qualification. Subsequently, he worked at Bethlehem Steel Company in Quincy and graduated from apprentice school as a marine structural designer. During his career as a marine designer, he participated in the design and construction of a number of important naval and commercial ships, among them the first nuclear-powered naval surface ships, the cruiser Long Beach, the frigate Bainbridge, and the world's largest (at that time) bulk carrier, the Manhattan.
After a 20-year career in design, he entered the contract engineering field, providing engineers and designers to the marine, nuclear, and aerospace industries. His career offered many opportunities, and he advanced from salesman to president of the Butler Service Group, Contract Technical Division, Montvale, NJ and the Nesco Design Company, Cleveland, OH and its five subsidiaries. Subsequently, he semi-retired and co-founded in 2001 the medical laboratory company HealthCare Connections, where he served as a director until passing.
Mr. Mainini enjoyed golf, fishing, baseball, hockey and football, both as a participant and spectator. He was a die-hard Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins, and golf fan. He was predeceased by his first wife Rita Roberts, mother of his eight children, in 1974. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Donna Blackmore and his eight children: Paul (Katie McNeil), Peter (Lori), Matthew (Sandy), Mark, Philip, Mary (Timothy Cresta), Maria (Jim Dougherty), and Patricia (Richard Metevier), as well as his sister Carol Isbister, 13 grandchildren, two great grandchildren-with another one on the way!-and numerous other family members and devoted friends.
Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 45 East Water St. in Rockland on Friday, Dec 28th from 4-7 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec 29th at 9 AM at Holy Family Church, 403 Union St. in Rockland. Burial will follow at Holy Family Cemetery, 92 Centre Avenue, Rockland.
After the service, you are welcome to join the family to celebrate Leo's life at Rockland Golf Course, 276 Plain Street, Rockland, MA. There will be another celebration of life at Woodside Plantation in Aiken, SC, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, Leo would have appreciated donations made to the Fisher House - WPB, 7305 N. Leo made a huge impact on my life when I worked at Butler. His humour, grit and smarts in the industry was so appreciated and he took the time to know me and understand my goals. I will forever remember his coaching, humour, intellect, and warm smile. He believed in me and had my back. I will always remember him and thank him for my career success. May he Rest In Peace and know his legacy lives on.

Dear Donna and family
Sam and I are very sorry for your loss. We had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Mr. Mainini and getting to know him. He was such a sweet and kind man. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren. Donna, the love, commitment and care you gave to Leo is incomparable to anything I have ever witnessed. An example for all of us to live by. We are thinking of you all. Keep your memories close and know he is with you.

Love,

Mark & family, thinking of you, sending you love and prayers. My parents have fond memories of your mom and dad when they both lived in the same 2 family in North Quincy. Can't believe that our parents both went on to have 8 children! God Bless everyone.
