Howard H. Evans
Aiken - Howard Herron Evans, 78, beloved husband of Sandra "Sandy" Gregory Evans, died Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at his residence.
A native of Jacksonville, FL, Howard was born December 30, 1939 to Robert H. Evans, Jr. and Anne Butler Evans.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sandy; two sons, Gregory H. (Elizabeth) Evans, Concord, NC, Robert H. (Caren) Evans, III, Greer, SC; grandchildren, David and Paul, University of Alabama, John and Catherine, Concord, NC; sister, Sula E. Tucker, Bessemer City, AL; sisters-in-law, Nellie Arrington, Ellicott City, MD, Beverly Giles, Wagener, SC; brothers-in-law, James K. Gregory, Columbia, SC, Alan Gregory, Aiken, SC; three nieces; four nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Stacy Evans.
He was a graduate of Landon High School, Jacksonville, FL in 1958 and the Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1964. He began his work career as a co-op student at the Savannah River Plant with DuPont in 1958. He earned his Professional Engineering license and continued with DuPont and Westinghouse for 33 years before retiring as Sr. Project Engineer.
Howard was a member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where he served as Elder, Deacon, chair of the Diaconate and was a member of the FOCUS Sunday School Class. After his retirement, he volunteered and served as Facilities Manager for 15 years.
He was a member of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association and Old Gold Society. A former member of the Aiken Jaycees, he served as an officer several times. He also was a member of ASME for over 25 years and served as its Chairman. He was active as a coach for t-ball and baseball in the Aiken Recreation League while his sons were involved.
Howard loved his family and his church. He enjoyed family vacations at Edisto Beach, working in his yard, fixing things and attending the Masters for over 50 years.
The family would like to offer special thanks to his caregiver, Frances Addison, and Pruitt Health/Hospice for the loving care given to Howard.
The service will be Saturday, October 13th at 10 o'clock at First Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Dr. Brian Coulter officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 224 Barnwell Ave. NW, Aiken, SC 29801.
