Wadley Glenn Obituary

Wadley "Raoul" Glenn, Jr., 75, died on January 27, 2025, in Greenville, South Carolina.

Born on March 5, 1949, in Sandy Springs, Georgia, he was a son of the late Dr. Wadley Raoul Glenn and Mrs. Frances Lewis Glenn.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Scales Glenn, his three sons, Wadley Raoul "Tripp" Glenn, III (Meredith), Lee Scales Glenn (Christy), William Lewis Glenn (Kerry) and seven adored grandchildren, Ellie, Anne Maxwell, Robert, Clare, James, William and Margaret. He is also survived by his brother, William Kearney Glenn and his first cousin, Thomas Kearney Glenn II. He is predeceased by his sister, Frances Glenn Mayson.

Raoul attended Sandy Springs (GA) High School. There, he was an All-State wrestler and football player. He graduated from University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

On June 3, 1972, he married his wife of 52 years, Susan, in Greenville, South Carolina. Raoul met Susan in the back of a U-Haul truck as they took high school students to a Young Life camp. No kids fell out of the truck and several weeks after the weekend, Raoul finally asked Susan out on a date. They lived in Charlotte, North Carolina for five years and then moved to Greenville in 1978, where they joined First Presbyterian Church.

Raoul worked as a residential real estate appraiser at Counts Martin Associates for over 20 years. He served on multiple boards for Young Life throughout his lifetime as well as supporting the Cancer Center with Prisma Health and the mission of First Presbyterian Church.

Raoul loved Young Life and was a lifelong volunteer and supporter. His first and favorite job was as horse wrangler at Windy Gap (a Young Life camp in North Carolina) for the first two years of the camp's existence. He loved this job.

Raoul was honored to receive the Young Life President's Lifetime Achievement Award. He and Susan contributed to over one hundred different initiatives in the Young Life Organization. Vast was his reach and he loved each initiative. Raoul was also the recipient of the BK Bryan Spirit of Philanthropy Award from Prisma Health.

Growing up, he loved spending time at Lake Burton (GA) with his uncle and cousin. Finding Raoul on the dock at Lake Burton was finding a content man in his favorite place.

Later in life, he loved all adventures. Hiking with his friends, the Grizzlies, spending time at his farm, traveling with Susan and Young Life, and watching his children and grandchildren play sports. After being asked to coach his son's soccer team, he opened a book to learn the game. He knew football, but he would learn soccer because he loved his boys.

Raoul showed up for the people he loved, and he showed up unconditionally.

The family would like to thank Jennifer Browning and her staff for Raoul's excellent care over the past few months and Kenneth Jones for decades of loyal friendship.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Greenville.

My Uncle Raoul

Uncle Raoul was a very smart and wise man. He was a very modest man. He was usually a fairly quiet man, but also a man who would talk as long as you wanted to. Most of my experiences with Uncle Raoul was from my childhood. I always loved going to Greenville and staying with my cousins, aunts and uncles, and my grandparents, but some of my favorite moments were when my Aunt Susan and Uncle Raoul took me on trips with them to Lake Burton and Litchfield Beach. I got to experience a lot of "firsts" with my Aunt Susan and Uncle Raoul. My Aunt Susan took me bowling and ice skating for the first time. Uncle Raoul took me skeet shooting, saltwater fishing, white water rafting and horseback riding on the beach, all for the first time. I´ll always cherish those memories. I know that my Uncle Raoul has helped many people, but I´d never know if others didn´t tell me. He never seemed to want or need the credit or recognition for all of the help that he gave. He helped teach me to be patient and modest. I´ll always remember the fun experiences we all had together. I´ll always tell people how great of a man he was. My heart goes out to my Aunt Susan and to my cousins. I pray for their peace and hope they know that though he is gone, that he will always be in our memories and in our heart.
Love,
-John
