Nell Thompson Obituary

Nell Adams Thompson passed away Jan. 13, 2025. Nell was born in Mauldin and lived on the Adams farm property west of town most of her life. She graduated Mauldin High School when there were only 11 grades. She worked as secretary for several Greenville and Mauldin businesses. Her skill at details helped her raise the level of professionalism in organizations such as her church, the local chapter of the Eastern Star, Red Cross, mayoral campaigns, the Korean War Veterans Association Foothills Chapter, and more.

She was one of the longest living members of Mauldin First Baptist Church, in which she displayed her lifetime love of music through singing and playing piano. She was also choir director for several years. In addition, she was one of the first female deacons, a natural fit for her nature of caring and sharing.

Many folks also knew Nell through her vegetable gardening, canning goodies, and her cooking. When someone in the community was sick or had a death, Nell was at the forefront of garnering support from folks to take food to the family. Some of her recipes were so good that folks requested them for reunions and other shared meals.

Nell was married to Francis Thompson for 66.5 years. She was the last one of her siblings and generation. She leaves behind two sons, David Thompson (Carol) of Independence, MO, and Terry Thompson of Charleston, SC; two grandchildren, Joshua Andrew Thompson (Wendi) and Kristen Sims, both of Kansas City; three great-grandchildren, Pepper Ann Sims, Brooks Howard Thompson, and Selah Joy Thompson; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Nell's influence, love, care, and commitment to a simple life have been felt in the responses to her death. Folks have reached out from all over the United States, Ireland, Great Britain, and elsewhere. While she will be missed, her spirit carries on in her hallmark of continued storytelling, giving back to the community, and shared meals.
