John Buffington Obituary

John "Jack" Godwin Buffington died August 28, 2018. He was 20 years old. A graduate of Waccamaw High School, he was a junior at the College of Charleston.

He loved wholeheartedly his mother and father, his brother and sister; his extended family; his friends, roommates, and fraternity brothers. Jack found joy in surfing, skateboarding, and the ocean air. His light graced the lives of all who knew him.

Born in Columbia, Jack spent happy early years at Shandon Presbyterian Preschool and A.C. Moore Elementary and in Hollywood Park with friends. The family moved to Pawleys Island when he was seven. The beach was the place he was the happiest; he spent his summers teaching surfing to younger kids. Jack was a varsity letterman for Waccamaw High's Cross Country team. A member of Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church, he served as head acolyte there during his high school years.

He is survived by his parents, Bobby and Melissa Buffington; his sister, Josie, and brother, Rob; his grandparents, Johnny and Judy Godwin, and Rebecca Godwin and Deane Bogardus; his aunts, Carrie Godwin Barnwell and Elizabeth Buffington Byrd, his uncles, Bill Buffington and Bryan Buffington. Special recognition, too, to an amazing community of friends and neighbors who treated Jack like family.

Visitation is Thursday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church, 113 Baskervill Drive, Pawleys Island. The memorial service, also held at Holy Cross, will be Friday at 2:00, with Father Wil Keith and Father Jason Roberson presiding; a reception will follow at the church. Memorials may be made to the College of Charleston Foundation for Suicide Prevention R819, 66 George Street, Charleston, SC 29424 or to the Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation (surfridergrandstrand.org).

Bobby and Melissa, we are so sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this time of mourning.

September 4, 2018

My morning started out beautifully, until I read your sons obituary. I don't know your family, never knew your son, but this tragic loss fills my eyes with tears & burdens my heart for all of you. Although words of love, prayers, & encouragement are meant to lift you up & assure you you're in the thoughts of many I sincerely doubt only those who have walked in your shoes today understand the depth of pain you are dealing with. I have no children, but it's hard to even imagine the magnitude of your grief. So l, for one, ask all who take the time to read his life story, to keep you in their prays for a long, long time. God be with your family on this long hard road to recovery. Just a caring friend & neighbor

Dear Bobby, Melissa, Josie and Rob---While we have never met, the Adkins Family wants to express how deeply sorry we are for the loss of your son Jack. Our son Thomas was very close with Jack as a friend, classmate and fraternity brother at CofC. I met Jack 2 years ago as he was the first to come right up and help Thomas and I move into his new housing. I will never forget Jack's smile, his kind spirit and willingness to help as if he was one of our own! His good manners jumped right out at me from the first greeting. Needless to say Thomas, his cousin Spencer Parrish and his entire fraternity are heartbroken over the loss of Jack. We know that Jack is in heaven with God and that we will all see him again one day. Until then, I also know that everyone of his fraternity brothers and friends will remember all of the good that Jack represented everyday and cherish the time that they had with him as well. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, fiends and relatives. May God be with all of you in this time of need.
