Greg Hiebel Obituary

Greg Edward Hiebel, 68, of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, passed away on February 19, 2026 at his residence.

Born July 9, 1957 in Highland Park, Illinois, he was the son of the late Edward Frank Hiebel, Jr. and the late Elizabeth "Betty" Helen (Shanks) Hiebel.

Greg grew up in Northbrook, IL and was an alumnus of Southern Illinois University. He resided for years in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, primarily Crystal Lake, IL before relocating to the South Carolina region in 2018 with his wife Carole.

Greg was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, and friend to all who knew him. He took great pride in his father's military service in the United States Marine Corps, and donated to military charities when he could. At SIU in college he worked as a bouncer and played football, forming many friendships that he maintained throughout his life.

Greg was also a lifelong Chicago sports fan who passionately followed the Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks, and Bulls. He was a movie and television enthusiast that loved everything from old John Wayne films to seeing the newest movie in the theater. He enjoyed weightlifting and liked building and working on projects around the house. He loved animals, especially spending time with his dogs Thor, Chloe and the late Lucky.

Greg is survived by his wife Carole (Jones) Hiebel; his son Sam (Stephany) Hiebel of Roscoe, IL; his granddaughter Sophia Hiebel; his sister Beth (Kurt) Martin of Westmoreland, NH; his step children Christopher Yates of Summerville, SC, Bryan Yates of Ridgeville, SC, and Amy Yates (Darby Sligh) of Chesnee, SC; and his step grandchildren Hilton Yates, Brighton Yates, and Grayson Yates.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date and will be held in Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
