Frederick Schilling Obituary

Frederick (Fred) Joseph Schilling, III, of Georgetown, SC, went home to be with the Lord at the age 75, on March 12, 2025. Born on October 19, 1949, in New York City, NY, Fred was the son of the late Dr. Fred and Clare Snyder Schilling.

Fred graduated from Assumption Preparatory School (Mass.). He graduated from Clemson University and from the University of South Carolina earning a Master of Public Health Administration. Upon graduating from Clemson, he taught U.S. History and coached at Northwestern High School in Rock Kill, SC, as well as, served in the United States Army Reserves as a Lieutenant.

In 1973, Fred began a 46-year career in healthcare administration starting with a residency in hospital administration through the Duke Endowment in Charlotte, NC, where he managed hospitals in West Columbia, Lancaster, and Florence, SC, and North Wilkesboro, NC. Fred served as Health Services Director for the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Corrections for 27 years. Upon his retirement in 2016, he had the longest tenure in that position in the country.

Fred's love for life was rooted in his deep love for Jesus Christ. He served the Lord in many ways, especially in how he never met a stranger, making everyone he encountered feel known and appreciated.

Fred was an avid fan of the Clemson football team and enjoyed watching them every season.

In his retirement, Fred became an avid Bible student and believed his life's purpose was to serve God, family, and others. He studied God's Word faithfully, devoting time each day to read and pray, holding close the truths found in Ephesians 2:8-9.

Surviving is his wife of 34 years, Marjorie Ruth Prince Schilling, sons Fred Schilling IV of Columbia, SC; and Will Schilling (Julie), of Simpsonville, SC; daughter, Denise Skiles, of Georgetown, SC; and granddaughter, Annie Schilling. Fred was proceeded in death by his mother and father, and three of his eight siblings. He is survived by his brother, Tom Schilling (Mickey) of Hilton Head Island, SC; and sisters, Dr. Kathy Colletta (Joe) of Delray Beach, FL; Tina Haynes (Oliver) of Deerfield Beach, FL; Lisa Schilling of Bluffton, SC, and Mary McGuinness (Rory) of Australia. He is also survived by his niece, Catherine Turner (Josh) and great niece, Rose, of Midlothian, VA; and nephew, Jack Schilling (Alpharetta, GA).

Fred leaves a legacy of love behind, not just for his family, but for anyone who knew him.

A private burial was held Friday, March 14, 2025, at the Holy Cross Faith Memorial Church Cemetery in Pawley's Island, SC.
