Walter Regnery Obituary

Walter Christopher "Kit" Regnery Mt. Pleasant - Walter Christopher "Kit" Regnery, 78, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born on July 15, 1944, in Newberry, SC, Kit was the son of the late Gertrude Kenny Regnery and Walter Joseph Regnery. After graduating from Presbyterian College, Kit moved to Charleston in 1968. He became well known as the co-owner of Paper Charley and The Three Nags. He branched out into the business world when he opened Timeout, Inc., where he was able to live his dream and share with others his love of sailing and being on the water. He introduced the Lowcountry to Hobie Cats and Patagonia gear and brought windsurfing to the east coast. He also organized many sailing regattas off the beach of Sullivan's Island during his early years in Charleston. Later, Kit changed careers and had a successful tenure in commercial real estate where his gift of treating all people with kindness and respect earned him a stellar reputation. Throughout his adult life, he remained a great lover of sailing and windsurfing and spent as much of his free time as he could on the ocean adjacent to his home of 30 years on Sullivan's Island. Kit was President of The Joanna Foundation, a local charitable foundation that he helped create. Generosity and helping others were the cornerstone of his life. He was deeply dedicated to his family and his faith. He was never without a smile on his face, and he was a friend to many. He will be deeply missed. Kit is survived by his wife, Alice Paylor; son, Chris Regnery (Lauren Haas); daughter, Margaret Ann Regnery (Will Jones); sister, Marybeth Greenslade (Dave); nephews, Bill Mennonna (Lisa), David Greenslade (Amy) and Yonge Jones (Wendy Cornett); nieces, Shelly Phillips, Eugenie Parker (Mike), Stefanie Zdunczyk (Mark) and Baliol Jones; great-nieces, Jaclyn Mennonna, Sarah Parker, Ashlyn Jones, Erin Jones and Amanda Zdunczyk; and great-nephews, David Mennonna, Alex Zdunczyk and Randall Phillips. He was predeceased by his sisters, Eugenie (Jinx) Regnery and Patty Regnery. Visitation with the family will be held at 1601 Marsh Harbor Lane, Unit 300, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464, between 5 PM and 7 PM on Wednesday, November 9, 2022. An informal service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 10, 2022, on Sullivan's Island beach at Station 18. (In case of rain, the service will be held in the warehouse located at 1602 Thompson Avenue on Sullivan's Island) followed by a reception at 1601 Marsh Harbor Lane, Unit 300, Mount Pleasant. So sorry to read of Kit´s passing. Met him in the early 70s with the purchase of our first Hobie Cat at Timeout. He took us to the beach to show us how to sail it. Later on, we bought a 16´ Hobie from him. He was always so nice and personable - seemed like we had always known him. Our first son is named Kit. We wanted something different and remembered his name. My thoughts and prayers will be with the family.

Godspeed to you Kit. You epitomized the gentile; kind; unassuming gentlemen of a bygone era. It was a pleasure to know and spend some time, albeit limited, with you during the last few years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Regnery family with hopes that you will be comforted by the great memories created on vacation cruises and life on Sullivan´s Island. You will be missed and appreciated for the wonderful family you have left behind. With thoughts and prayers. Gordon and Holly Jones and Family

Kit was a light in a sometimes murky world. His early endeavors -- Paper Charlie and The Three Nags -- are still fresh in the memory of many of us.
And I was sorry to read that his lovely sister Jinx had passed away.
My condolences to the family.
