Virginia Smith Obituary

Virginia Smith Brunson, SC - Doris Virginia Polk Smith, of Brunson, S.C. entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 10th at her home in Brunson. Virginia was born June 14, 1926 in Hampton County, a daughter of the late Venie Cook and Russell Polk. She would have been 95 years old on June 14th. Virginia was married to the late Lee Roy Smith. They lived in the Mt. Carmel/Estill, S.C. area for 54 years. After her husband passed away, she moved to Brunson, S.C. in 2004. Virginia was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful worker in the church and community. Upon moving to Brunson, she attended Hickory Grove Baptist Church. She was a devoted Christian, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Virginia worked for Dr. Harrison L. Peeples and the Family Medical Center in Estill for 23 years and often said that she loved every patient that came to the office. Seeing a need for a volunteer Fire Department in the Nixville Community, Virginia worked diligently to help organize and was instrumental in getting the Nixville Fire Department established. After her mother became disabled, Virginia became a "mother" to her two sisters, Eileen and Bernice and four brothers, Vernon, Elliott, Lossie and Randolph. She kept the family together with love and kindness throughout her lifetime. Virginia Smith is survived by her daughter, Angela Suggs, and husband, John of Cornelius, N.C. and her son, Rickey L. Smith and wife, Janice of Estill, S.C. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jason (Katie) Suggs of Davidson, N.C.; Joel (ZZ) Suggs of Cornelius, N.C.; Brandon (Jill) Suggs of Huntersville, N.C.; Bradley (Andrea) Smith of Estill, S.C.; and Alison (Kevin) Johnstone of Estill, S.C. Surviving great-grandchildren are Aubrey Smith (Estill, S.C.), Byron and Wells Johnstone (Estill, S.C.), Addison Suggs (Huntersville, N.C.), Trevor and Sloane Suggs (Cornelius, N.C.). A brother, Randolph Polk (Varnville, S.C.) also survives her. Virginia was predeceased by a son, Russell Elliott Smith. Services will be 1:30 PM Saturday, June 12, 2021, at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, with burial in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Dewey Shaffer and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 1 PM prior to the service. Special appreciation is given to her caregivers and trusted friends, Faye DeWitt, Circle of Love - Rebecca Love, Becky Chavis, Sheila Dicks, Kathy Bowles, and Cathy Bowles and Victoria Ward. The family would also like to thank Dr. Neil Shealy, Buck Harvey, P. A. and Dr. Antony Rea for their many years of care as well as Amedisys Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Mt. Carmel Cemetery Fund, c/o Rickey Smith, Browning Gate Road, Estill, S.C. 29918.
