Verna Powell Obituary

Verna Eleanor Powell JAMES ISLAND - Verna Eleanor Powell, age 93, of James Island, SC, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2021. She was born December 5, 1927 in Macungie PA; the daughter of Jonathan and Emma Schantzenbach. Verna's wonderful memory will be cherished in the lives of those whom she left behind. Her 2 sisters, Esther Mohr and Faye Derr (Bill), 2 sons, Jon N. Powell (Paige) and R. Bruce Powell (Sandy). 7 grandchildren, Patrick Campbell (Meg), Shannon Powell (Kenyon), Daniel Powell, Geddis Powell (Jenna), Sam Powell (Rachel), Mary Ellen Niepsuj (Chris), and Bailey Powell, as well as 7 great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by 6 brothers. In her earlier days, she was an airline stewardess for American Airlines, then served in the U.S. Navy, where she met her husband, the late CDR. Daniel G. Powell USN. She traveled and lived all over the world before retiring in Charleston. Verna was an avid bowler and enjoyed doing Ikebana. She was also artistic and did cross-stitch, punch needle, knitting, crocheting, and silk screening. She also enjoyed volunteering for the American Red Cross, and the Lowcountry Senior Center on James Island. She will be sadly missed by her friends and family. The funeral services will be private.
