Traute Page Obituary

Traute Lafrenz Page YONGES ISLAND, SC - Traute Lafrenz Page's eventful life ended March 6, 2023. Traute was mother to four children, grandmother to seven and great-grandmother to five. She was a physician; an opponent and prisoner of the Nazi regime; and an anthroposophist who lived and worked with the conviction that humanity has spiritual origins and goals. Born in Hamburg Germany on May 3, 1919, Traute was the last surviving participant in the White Rose, a small medical student group at Munich's Maximillian University, who dared to defy the powerful Nazi regime. The White Rose composed and distributed pamphlets rebuking the Nazis while invoking the great literary voices of German history, including Goethe and Schiller. When the group's identity was discovered, the first 6 members arrested were executed. The Gestapo subsequently arrested and imprisoned Traute until Allied forces liberated her prison two years later. She emigrated to San Francisco and worked as a medical resident at St. Joseph's hospital. In 1948, she married fellow resident physician Vernon Page of Texas. Together they formed a medical practice in tiny Hayfork, California. Vernon Page received further training in ophthalmology, and the growing family settled in Evanston, IL. Strong conviction in the reality of the spiritual world inspired Traute's adult life. She joined the Anthroposophical Society and was an early practitioner of the anthroposophical-inspired holistic medical approach. Like many women in the post WW2 years, Traute was at home with her young family. She liked to say "in those days you met PhD's at the park." In the 1960s, Traute organized Waldorf summer school programs in Evanston. Waldorf schools work to awaken and enliven recognition of human spirit through art, poetry, and appreciation of the great human advances. Her son, Michael and granddaughter, Emily are Waldorf teachers. In later years, Traute became director of the Esperanza school in Chicago for developmentally delayed children, with a focus on these same principles. Traute always traveled extensively with her family including trips to Italy, Austria, France, Spain, Norway, Ireland, Scotland, Egypt, Mexico, and South America into her 80s and 90s. In 1993, Traute and Vernon moved to Charleston, SC. On her 100th birthday, the German embassy presented Traute with Germany's Order of Merit cross for her participation in the White Rose and defense of humanity. On the day of her death, a handwritten letter from Germany's president arrived conveying his respect and gratitude for her contributions. Traute is survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Easeley (daughter Sheri Caulkins), daughter, Renee Meyer (Eric) of Yonges Island, South Carolina; granddaughter, Emily Meyer (Ryan), great-grandsons, Winston, Solomon and Beauregard Hall; grandson, Fritz Meyer (Fallon), great- grandson, Knox Meyer, all residing in Charleston County; son, Michael Page (Liv) of Oslo, Norway; grandson, Christian Page, granddaughter, Iselin Page (Philip) and great-granddaughter, Liv Page of Stockholm, Sweden; son, Thomas Page (Sarah) of Evanston, Illinois, granddaughters, Katherine and Charlotte Page, grandson, Nathaniel Page; son, Kim Page (Wendy) of Troncones, Mexico; nieces, Roswitha Messner and Gudrun Radler, nephew Roderich Radler, Ursel Radler widow of nephew, Karl Radler, grandniece, Ute Radler, grandnephews, Martin, Simon, and Karl Radler of Austria and Germany. A memorial service at Eric and Renee Meyer's home, 4277 Hwy 165, Yonges Island, is planned for Saturday, March 11 at 11:30. Friends of Traute and the family are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Acorn School of Charleston, a Waldorf kindergarten and grade school. As the world gets politically far right, I wish I had the courage and inspiration of Traute as I believe there are battles to be fought that she would not turn away from. We were blessed to have her then and hope her example will encourage others to fight on.

Traute lived an amazing life of service and support for all that is good. She was the support and guadian angel for many around the world. In Charleston she became a wonderful friend to me and the Clowns Bazaar. After I moved elsewhere my visits back were incomplete without a stop at Yonges Island to once again encounter the very presence of this remarkable woman and often her delightful family that she loved so much.

Traute will always be an inspiration for me. She first visited the Clowns Bazaar in Charleston after Mary Staples had told her about it. She then became a supporter of the effort and me. I cherish every visit I had with her after I moved from Charleston and will always remember her and her wonderful family. We were all blessed by an amazing presence.

Through this text I would like to convey my most sincere greetings to the Traute family. I had the enormous pleasure of meeting her when I was a student at the College of Charleston, and later meeting her on her visits to Uruguay. A big hug to Rene and Emily who welcomed me on Thanksgiving more than 20 years ago, here is a photo from those days. Love from Uruguay

Dear Family of Traute Lafrenz. It is with love and reverence in my heart that I learned today from a German friend about Traute passing on to the next.... I wrote a personal letter to Traute's daughter about 6 months ago. It was a peculiar letter that I always hoped to receive a response to but never expected. I wish you all the very very best. I am glad that me and my friend H who I wanted to bring to meet you, one time happened to be in Charleston together, so close to you. So connected to you. We love you for an eternity. /Sofi

We grieve the loss of Traute. A lovely soul who set an example for others to follow. Injustice is humanity´s common enemy.

"The beauty of the soul shines out when a man bears with composure one heavy mischance after another, not because he does not feel them, but because he is a man of high
and heroic temper." - Aristotle

I am a stranger to you living in Layton, Utah. I happened to have spent my morning today reading all about the White Rose movement and saw that the last remaining member's funeral service would be held this very morning. I would love to have been able to send a white rose bouquet, but wasn't able to make arrangements soon enough and also worried that it might become intrusive for your family.

Of course there is very little that can be said of such courage and additional praise adds very little. You should know, however, that her heroics as well as the other of the movement are still inspiring people the world over. Such remarkable courage will always be remembered.

On behalf of the White Rose Foundation, Munich and personally, I pay tribute to Traute Lafrenz, her lucidity and courage. She was in the resistance because she thought it was important and necessary. Thank you also for your support of the White Rose Foundation over the decades. Hildegard Kronawitter, Chairwoman

During the Chicago years, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Page at Grant Place. It was the local and national headquarters of the Anthroposophical Society in America. After listening to me practice singing for an event she commented, "The human voice is my favorite instrument." She may not have been referring to my voice but what a human being is capable of creating. This was a lasting memory. Her passion for working with individuals with special needs has impacted my journey and I find myself on the other end of the Mississippi, in New Orleans working with a Camphill affiliate- similar to her courageous and life-changing initiative with Esperanza! She was a powerhouse! Journey on dear Traute!

May Dr. Page rest in peace. She was a true inspiration and shared her experiences in the Nazi resistance group called the White Rose. I will always remember her strength, kindness, and integrity. Attached is a photo of her exhibit in the White Rose Memorial at the University of Munich.

What a splendid human being! And a splendid life well-lived, an example to us all. As an expert on the White Rose anti-Nazi resistance, I know well that Traute Lafrenz Page was among the very best of them, and among the very best than humanity has ever produced. I have profound respect for her, and send her family my sympathies and warmest wishes. I will make a contribution to the Acorn School in her memory and honor. Dr Jud Newborn

Bill and I were so saddened to read of Traute's passing this morning. The end of an era for sure. We were glad to see her wonderful story was in the obit so all can see what a hero she really was. We have fond memories of Traute and Bill driving to classes at the Citadel together and his being her "boy toy". Here's a photo of her I found on my computer, taken in 2007. Much sympathy and many condolences to the family. Love, Bruce and Bill Krucke
